"Barker's Marker$" question (does this seem unfair?)
« on: September 06, 2006, 05:37:39 PM »
Per the Wikipedia article on "Barker's Marker$", it says that if a contestant makes a perfect bid before playing that game, he/she must give the $500 back during the prize description, so that it can be given out again; this is because TPIR has only 1 set of 5 $100 bills, which are used for perfect bids and "Barker's Marker$"-- to quote:

"The show only has one set of five $100 bills, which are used for perfect bids and for this game. If a contestant makes a perfect bid immediately before playing Barker's Marker$, the contestant has to hand the money back to Bob during the prize description so that it can be handed to the contestant again for the game."

Doesn't that seem a bit unfair? In other words, does that mean that a contestant can end up with nothing, despite making a perfect bid? You would think that the show would have more than one set of 5 $100 bills, because I thought that the $500 for a perfect bid rightfully belonged to the contestant as a reward, but seemingly it's different in "Barker's Marker$." After all, why in smoke would the contestant make a perfect bid, only to end up playing a game in which the bonus for it is used in a game in which it could be lost?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the $100 bills are only a prop.  You are made to give them back at the conclusion of your segment, no matter what game you play.  After the show, you are paid by check.

You are reading way too much into the gameplay.

My guess is that after the show, they give the contestant $500 back for the perfect bid.

I suggest you read the post immediately above yours.

EDIT:  And allow me to show you where Wikipedia got that information.

Rude much?  You could've just edited your post upon reading sidey's post.  'Cause once you made your post, you would've been able to read sidey's post.

I didn't know that the $100 bills were merely a prop. I guess that puts them in the same category as the money in "1/2 Off"-- that is to say, not real. Thanks for illuminating something that I did not know-- I appreciate that.

No, the One Bid/Barker's Marker$ $500, as well as Lucky $even's $7, are real money.  They are simply used for show purposed on camera and are not kept by the contestants following the act.
Roger Dobkowitz's Seven Commandments of The Price Is Right:
1. Tape and edit the show as if it were live.
2. Never tell the contestant what to do.
3. Size matters. (The bigger the prize, the better the prize and the bigger the reaction.)
4. All prizes are good.
5. Never do anything on the show that would embarrass a parent with a kid watching.
6. Never put on a prize that would make the show look cheap.
7. It’s the game, stupid! (It’s about the game.)

Just for future reference, no game show contestants are actually given any of their money or prizes on the day of their show's taping.  They receive them later, via delivery and/or check.

Does that mean that the seven $1 bills in Lucky $even are fake too?

And if they are real, does the contestant have to give the bills back to CBS and will later receive a check for $1 or $2?

They must use the same $500 prop for the Shell Game, when the contestant wins all 4 chips.

Cash winnings are automatically deducted from taxes, so when all is said and done, I doubt there's ever been a Lucky $even winner who actually physically received any money.
