49 years ago on this date, the nighttime edition of The Price Is Right premiered on NBC's prime time line-up. It aired Mondays at 7:30 PM Eastern (prior to 1971, prime time began at 7:30 Eastern Monday through Saturdays, and 7 PM Eastern Sundays).

Critics, who were seeing Price for the first time, thought the Apocalypse was at hand, calling it the worst show in prime time that fall. Viewers weren't swayed--it became the top rated prime time game show in the 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons, and no. 8 overall in prime time. In 1958 it was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding quiz/panel/audience participation show (beaten by CBS's What's My Line?)

The nighttime Price on NBC aired at:
7:30 PM Mondays, Sept. 23, 1957 - June 9, 1958
10 PM Thursdays, June 26, 1958 - Sept. 11, 1958
8:30 PM Wednesdays, Sept. 24, 1958 - Sept. 6, 1961
8:30 PM Mondays, Sept. 18, 1961 - Sept. 10, 1962
9:30 PM Mondays, Sept. 17, 1962 - Jan. 21, 1963
9:30 PM Fridays, Feb. 1, 1963 - Sept. 6, 1963

On ABC:
8:30 PM Wednesdays, Sept. 18, 1963 - Nov. 27, 1963
9:30 PM Fridays, Dec. 6, 1963 - Sept. 11, 1964
Bureaucracy is cutting the red tape lengthwise.

Happy birthday to The Price is Right!  Who would've thought that a concept like THIS would wind up being the most popular show on the planet today?
I just wanted to drop you a note and thank you for your love, affection and loyalty to me, drew, the models and.... The Price is Right....thank you for being such a "Loyal Friend & True". -Rich Fields (in an e-mail sent to me on 3/17/2010)

I support The Price is Right...even if nobody I know likes Drew Carey.

Well, strictly speaking, if it wasn't for the original Price is Right, then "Golden-Road.net" would not even exist!

And you completely miss my point of your first post in this thread, "Who would've thought that a concept like THIS would wind up being the most popular show on the planet today?"

Getting back on track, this is the nighttime edition. The daytime edition, where it all began, premiered ten months earlier, on November 26, 1956.

Oh wait, this isn't a play-along.

Remember when your teachers in grade school said to ignore kids that were annoying you and they'd go away?

It never worked back then either.

Hehehe...very funny.  I was having a simple argument with good ol' Patchy about the concept of the ORIGINAL Price is Right.  My point was without the original concept, this web site would never exist today!
