49 years ago on this date, the nighttime edition of The Price Is Right premiered on NBC's prime time line-up. It aired Mondays at 7:30 PM Eastern (prior to 1971, prime time began at 7:30 Eastern Monday through Saturdays, and 7 PM Eastern Sundays).
Critics, who were seeing Price for the first time, thought the Apocalypse was at hand, calling it the worst show in prime time that fall. Viewers weren't swayed--it became the top rated prime time game show in the 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons, and no. 8 overall in prime time. In 1958 it was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding quiz/panel/audience participation show (beaten by CBS's What's My Line?)
