July 26, 1963--Forgetting something, Bill?
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:00:45 PM »
Bill comes out to applause and prefaces things by pointing out a bonus a contestant named Robert Reynolds won several months back. It was being an extra in the movie The Fall Of The Roman Empire, and Bill shows photos of the shoot and a scene where we see Mr. Reynolds. Bill starts right off afterwards explaining the rules and showing the first item up for bids: A wall unit in Oriental design  and natural satin walnut, Compartments conceal a hi-fi unit and amplifier. It has electrical outlets for a clock radio and a coffee maker. The tambored doors in center reveal a single-mattress bed. Price authorities: Dantomuro Furniture, Lynbrook N Y and Hamilton Beach Company, Racine WI.

Bill sits down in the bed for a very good reason: "I've been doing this show for, what is it, seven years now. And I forgot to introduce the contestants!" Everybody in the theater--especially Bill--got the biggest laugh from this on-the-air faux pas. Bill now introduces the contestants:

* Doris Milke, from Englishtown N J, is the current champion and has amassed the highest total in the show's history: a five-week total of $72,769.

* Gary Ritner is a salesman from Shelton, WA.

* Laverne Ramsey is a housewife from Birmingham AL.

* Alvin Tattrie is an engineer from Belleville IL.

Now bidding starts on the wall unit.

Mrs. Milke starts anywhere. Minimums are $25:

Actual retail price: $1747.90, with Mr. Ritner the winner. He hit the bonus bell as well. He receives a six-piece assortment of gym equipment from Battle Creek Equipment, Battle Creek MI. Six girls demonstrate the equipment (Bill jokes the girls come with the equipment!)

Another look at the current sweepstakes: The prize is a cabin cruiser from Holtzcraft. It's 20 feet long and comes equipped with a Holtzclaw trailer and two Evinrude motors, each 75 hp. Also: Color Plus nail enamel by Lanolin Plus. (Details on sending postcards were edited out as this was from a GSN kinescope rebroadcast.)

Next item: Five fashion evening gowns worn and displayed by five of the girls. Price authority: Cameo Evening Fashions, New York.

Mrs, Ramsey starts anywhere. Minimums are $100.

A poll of audience applause says that Mrs. Ramsey drives home with the car. (Nobody applauded for Mr. Tattrie's 7000 bid--first time a contestant got no applause during an audience poll.)

Actual retail price: $4559.90 with Mr. Ritner the winner.
