Another find, coming from December 25, 1961...

Bill comes out to loud applause and  shows the tie his mother-in-law gave him for Christmas--a red and green checked pattern! Bill quips "That's in the spirit...and next year I want some spirits!"

The bargain hunters:
* - Ann Soifer is the returning champion. She's a business machine operator from Providence R I, and won the championship the previous week with a whopping $20,523 in merchandise.

* - Pat DeBenedetto is the sweepstakes winner from December 18. He's an engineer and was flown in as part of his winnings from Kenosha WI.

* - Doris Komener is a housewife from Camden N J.

* - Chris Christos is a manager from Kalamazoo MI.

All contestants receive a gift package from the makers of Anacin (the evening's primary sponsor).

The first two instruments--the drum and piano--are cued up playing "Jingle Bells." Each of the other five instruments, one at a time, join in, and Mrs. Soifer must identify each within ten seconds. For the first she gets right she wins $100 and it doubles wioth each successive instrument named right. She got three of them, the piano, saxophone and trumpet but missed on the flute and tuba. She did win $400 cash.

Next item: a 1962 Mercury Meteor four-door sedan in two-tone white with metallic blue vinyl interior. It has a 6-cylinder V-8 engine and comes with heater/defroster and long-life coolant. Mrs. Komener starts anywhere; minimums are $50:

Actual retail price: $1227, with Mrs. Komener the winner and she hit the bonus bell. Her bonus is 120 bottles of Paul Masson champagne, and an evening gown modeled by June. But as June turns to show the dress, a rip is noticed by all on her left rear, showing her slip. Bill is sending Mrs. Komener to a tailor to have the rip repaired--in Paris. Mrs Komener and her husband will be flown to Paris for a week vacation.

Final item: A 21-ft. powerboat, the Coronado from Century Boats. It's powered by a 260-hp V-8 Interceptor engine and seats nine. Price authority: Century Boats, Manasee MI.

Mr. Christos starts with the opening asked to be at least $2500; minimums are $100:

..................... ..................... ................. ..............2500
................2600 .............3000 ..........3400 ..............4000
................4500 .............5000 ..........5200 ..............7000
................7100 .............7800 ..........7900 ..............8000
..............8100 ...........* 7800 .......* 7900 ........... * 8300
.............* 8400

Bill alerts the panel that they have all overbid. Instead of letting the boat go by the boards on Christmas, he has the tote screened erased and each player makes one bid with each required to be below 7800 (the lowest original frozen bid):

- - SOIFER  - - DeBENEDETTO - - KOMENER - - CHRISTOS - -
..................... ..................... ................. ............* 7900
..............* 6200 ..........* 6700 .......* 6100

Actual retail price: $7623.75, with Mr. DeBenedetto the winner.

(Mr. Christos' bid of 7900 may look like a suicide bid since it was over 7800, but he actually looked disappointed when he didn't win.)

Final totals:
- - SOIFER  - - DeBENEDETTO - - KOMENER - - CHRISTOS - -
...............6133 .............7623 ..............3157..................0

Mr. Christos receives a 20-volume set of the World Book Encyclopedia. Mr. Benedetto is the new champion, and Mrs. Soifer leaves with a healthy two-week total of $26,656. Bill wishes all a Merry Christmas as Dave Carey and his band do a reprise of "Jingle Bells."
