April 16, 1958 - Don's a daddy again!
« on: December 09, 2011, 04:21:25 PM »
Bill comes out to loud applause and ells that the sweepstakes winner will be announced later.

The bargain hunters:
* - Irene DeBaun, the current champion, is a farmer's wife from Irishtown N J and won $8388 in merchandise the previous week.

* - Paul Jones is a salesman from Simpsonville S C. (Paul Jones is a quite common name, but was notable to us in Atlanta as TV critic for the Atlanta Constitution. For the record, he--the TV critic, not the contestant--hated this version of "Price"  and Barker's show.)

* - Grace Armando is a receptionist from Colony N Y.

* - Stanford Campbell is a bus driver from Philadelphia.

All contestants receive a gift package from Spiedel, consisting of watch bands, photo idents and matching jewelry. Mr. Campbell accidentally called Bill's name as Don, and it gave Bill a chance to announce that Don Pardo's wife gave birth to their sixth child, a girl named Cathy.

First item up for bids: An MG Model-A sports car, imported from Great Britain. It has a 4-cylinder engine, curved windshield, carpeted interior, and four forward speeds. Price authority: Hambro Automotive Corporation.

Mrs. DeBaun opens; each contestant is asked to go at least $100 over the previous top:

(*--frozen bid; last bid buzzer follows bid in bold)

Actual retail value: $2658.60, with Mrs. Armando the winner, and she hit the bonus bell. She receives Women's sportswear from Fruit of the Loom in coordinated separates, Puritan men's sportswear...and a unicycle (!) until her new car is delivered (demonstration of the unicycle by Gene LaPlatt).

Next item: a pearl necklace, modeled by a beautiful little girl named Penny. 99 cultured pearls in progressive sizes from 3mm to 8mm, accented on a white gold clasp with a gleaming diamond and 2 Caversham cut rubies. Price authority: Johnston Jewelers, Waldorf-Astoria.

Mr. Jones opens and it's a one-bid item:
- - DeBAUN - - - - JONES - - - ARMANDO - - - CAMPBELL - -
....................... ...........* 165 ........* 250 ............* 266
..............* 290
Actual retail value: $34.50, everyone overbid. And to whoever made the best bid would have gone a check for $1000. Bill tears up the check's signature to keep things on the level. ("I've always wanted to tear up Goodson and Todman!")

The winner for the Big Wheels Showcase is determined. The items and their prices:
Chrysler Windsor sedan - $3472.55
Raleigh bicycle - $59.95

Five people submitted postcards with identical bids of $10,652.33. A run-off was held; the five entrants were asked to send in their bid on the French taxi. The closest bid without going over and winner of the showcase is Betty Lynch of New Hyde Park, N Y.

Next item: A portable barbecue cart set in copper tone and satin black. It has a four-section grill and 12 motor-driven shishkabob skewers. It comes with a cutting board and striped awning. Price authority: Chattanooga BBQ Company and Mola Inc.
