But the infamous WINK and LOSK readouts hadn't appeared yet.

I can assure you, there were never "WINK" and "LOSK" readouts on Super Saver.

Much as I hate to give support to Zach, he's actually right here -- the last couple years $uper $aver was around, the fourth spot on the display had a habit of staying on the "K" from "BANK" for the entire game.

Yup, Steve is right. In fact, my avatar has just such an example from 1994.

Just to add to that, once they realized WINK and LOSK were recurring problems that were noticeable on air, the word BANK was removed entirely and only the dollar amount portion of the display was lighted up (I believe this was done until the problem was completely corrected). On one occasion, the display read ' ' ' ' instead of BANK.

One thing I noticed, the marked up item was marked up by such an amount that if you picked the three products that were marked down the most (for a total of $1.20 in this case) and if you did pick the marked-up item, you'd be left with $1.00 for the win.  I saw this repeated on the December 14, 1989 and November 8, 1993 playings, but I wonder if this rule was adhered to until 1996, when it wasn't uncommon to see savings as high as 70 cents in the game, even in the same setup as say, 60 cents or 50 cents.

Hah, is that the only major graphic malfunction that was allowed to stay on the air for multiple playings?
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...

There once was a burnt-out light bulb in one of Five Price Tags' backdrops for several years before it was fixed.
