April 19, 1963 - a ginormous bonus
« on: January 06, 2012, 04:35:50 PM »
Bill comes out to loud applause and tells that the new sweepstakes will be announced later.

The bargain hunters:
* - Jack Morrill, the current champion, is a salesman from Edina MN, having won an $8500 fur coat the previous week.

* - Rochelle Spector is a housewife from Baltimore MD.

* - Samuel Satterfield was flown in from Pinesville N C as part of his winnings as the previous sweepstakes winner. He is a lunchroom operator for a textile plant.

* - Billie Sue Greibel is a housewife from Lavonia MI.

All contestants receive a gift package from AeroWax, the evening's sponsor.

First item up for bids: A two-door compact convertible. The contestants look at a film and see that there's more to it than meets the eye: with the flick of a switch, the car becomes a boat. It's the Amphi-Car, which travels on water at 10 mph on a 4-cylinder engine, has four speeds, goes 32 mpg on land and uses 1/2 gallon of fuel per hour on water. It is constructed of electronically welded steel and has all standard marine equipment. Price authority: Amphi-Car Corp., New York City N Y.

Bidding on the Amphi-Car is at its F.O.B. delivered price, point of entry Newark N J. Mr. Morrill opens; an opening of at least $500 is requested with minimum bids at $100:

(*--frozen bid; last bid buzzer follows bid in bold)

- - MORRILL - - - - SPECTOR - - - SATTERFIELD - - - GREIBEL - -
................1000 ............1250 ...........1500 ............1750
................1900 ............2650 ...........2975 ..........* 3300
.............* 1900 ..........* 2650 .........* 2975 .........* 2900

Actual retail price: $2881.50, with Mrs. Spector the winner.

Next item is prefaced with the announcement that whoever bids best for this will win a bonus worth thousands of dollars. The item is a Westinghouse light bulb, the Glo-Brite can go from a reading lumination of 150 watts to a night light equivalent to the light one one candle. Bill tells the panel that it costs under $1, so they may bid in cents. Caution is advised. Price authority: Westinghouse Corporation, lamp division, Bloomfield N J.

Mrs. Spector opens:

- - MORRILL - - - - SPECTOR - - - SATTERFIELD - - - GREIBEL - -
....................... .................29 ..................49 ................56
....................79 ..............* 29 ..................85 .............* 56
.................* 79 ..............* 29 ...............* 85 .............* 56

Actual retail price: 67 cents, with Mrs. Spector the winner. As a bonus, she is shown a bust of Thomas Edison. She will be receiving the fruits of his labor, a stageful of electric appliances, selected from a variety of manufacturers. 97 appliances in all, which includes washer-dryer, refrigerators, electric fans, radios, TVs, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, all told worth over $8000.

The new sweepstakes is announced. The items: two Mercury automobiles. The Colony Park station wagon as a 390 hp V-8 engine and has automatic transmission, and the Comet S-22 Sportster as a record-setting 260 hp Cyclone V-8 engine and comes with Merc-o-Matic automatic transmission. Also included: Arpege perfume by Lanvin. (Winner of this sweepstakes is detailed on the May 10, 1963 topic.)

Next item: Sterling silver service for 12 by the Alvin Corporation. 110 pieces with storage chest. Price authority: Alvin Corporation, Providence R I.
Mr, Satterfield starts anywhere; minimums are $50:

- - MORRILL - - - - SPECTOR - - - SATTERFIELD - - - GREIBEL - -
................. ................ .................50 ................150
............300 ............350 ...............400 ................475
............525 .........* 350 ............* 400 ...............575
.........* 525 .........* 350 ............* 400 ..............* 575

Actual retail price: $1405.05, with Mrs. Greibel the winner again. And she hit the second bonus bell. Bill leads her into it by a series of questions, asking what her favorite appetizer is (shrimp), then her favorite soup (mushroom), her favorite main course (steak), and then her favorite dessert. After a little effort (thanks to the errant syntax), she was led into pineapple, one of which is presented to her. It's not ripe yet, so, she gets to pick her own--in Hawaii. Mrs. Greibel and her husband will fly economy class to Honolulu for a week's stay.

Final item: a diamond pendant. It has a large center-cut diamond weighing 11.89 karats accented by 42 contrasting white diamonds with a total weight of 3.5 karats. It is mounted on a platinum chain, and the mounting can be removed to turn the pendant into a diamond ring. Price authority: Johnson Jewels at the Waldorf-Astoria, New York City N Y.

Mrs. Greibel starts with the opening asked to be at least $3000. Minimums are $100:

- - MORRILL - - - - SPECTOR - - - SATTERFIELD - - - GREIBEL - -
..................... ..................... ................. .............3500
................4000 .............4500 ..........4900 ..............5500
................6000 .............6300 ..........6800 ..............8000
................9500 ...........10500 .......* 6800 ............*11000
.............*11100 .........*11200

An impromptu audience poll says that it's between Mrs. Spector and Mr. Satterfield. Actual retail price: $9000, with Mrs. Satterfield the winner.

Final totals:
- - MORRILL - - - - SPECTOR - - - SATTERFIELD - - - GREIBEL - -
...................0 ................2881 .................9000  ............10676

Mrs. Spector is the big winner and will return to defend her championship next week. Mr. Morrill leaves with the $8500 he won last week.

Can you check those scores again? I think there was an adding fail or something, because Mrs. Spector shouldn't have won with those scores

Grebel also looks like it was added up wrong. Are sure it wasn't Satterfield who won?

Ccook seemed to forget to add $8,000.67 to Samuel Satterfield's total ($8,000 for the appliances and $0.67 for the light bulb).

My error...Mrs. Griebel won the light bulb (her 56 was closest to the ARP of 67 without going over), the appliances, the sterling silver and the trip to Hawaii. (Yeesh...I either need to proofread more carefully or hire a proofreader.)

Mrs. Spector won the Amphi-Car and Mr. Satterfield won the diamond ring. Mrs. Griebel should be the new champ. Again, mea culpa.
