June 30, 1960 - Mr. Jones! This is live television!
« on: January 26, 2012, 09:33:50 PM »
Bill comes out dressed in what looks to be a mansion's servant attire. He explains it simply as wanting to look snappy.

The bargain hunters:
* - Kenneth Jones is the current champion. A truck driver from Los Angeles, he returns from the June 16th show with a three-week total of $23,767. When asked if he saw the previous week's show (a panel of honeymooners), he said he did "and I'm glad it was a special because I didn't bid a damn--er, darn one right!" The audience howled with laughter; Bill didn't bat an eye but he did quip "And you didn't get off to a good start tonight, either!"

* - Betty McCann is a housewife from Charlotte N C.

* - Dwight Dillon is an insurance salesman from Martinsburg VA.

* - Ally McMurtry is a student from Graham TX, attending a convention of Tri-Del pledges at Lake Placid. Bill's wife Anne is also a Tri-Del, from USC. Miss McMurtry attends TCU.

All contestants receive a gift package from Lever Brothers, one of the evening's sponsor.

First item up for bids: A dining room. 12 pieces from Van Leigh, consisting of a table with six side chairs and two arm chairs, an armoire with glass doors on top and diamond-design doors below, a bar which also becomes a serving counter and a buffet. All in Central American swirl mahogany with soft caramel color finish. Price authority: Van Leigh Galleries, New York.

Mr. Jones starts anywhere; minimums are $100:
(*--frozen bid; last bid buzzer follows bid in bold)

- - - JONES - - - - McCANN - - - DILLON - - - McMURTRY - -
.................200 .............300 ............400 .............600

...............1300 ............1400 .........* 900 ...........1550
............* 2000 .........* 3200 ..........* 900..........* 1550

Actual retail price: $2156, with Mr. Jones the winner. He got so excited he fell out backwards off his chair, then the curtain--raised to show the prize--was lowered on top of him. Bill handed him the price tag as "your membership to the Blue Cross!" On top of which, Mr. Jones hit the bonus bell. An animatronic likeness of Bill Cullen, in the same attire he's wearing is wheeled out on the turntable. It's taller than he is, so Bill gets a box to stand on so he'll be taller. (Bill: "Will the real Bill Cullen please lie down?") The animatronic holds a chauffer's hat which is brought to its head. It leads to the first bonus prize: a 1960 King Midget Sports Car. In the animatronic's other hand is a sailor's hat, leading to the other prize--a speedboat from American Mark marine with trailer and Evinrude motor.

Next item: Stock. It's 40 shares of a company near to Bill's heart: 40 shares, common, of NBC. Yes, the National Biscuit Company (a.k.a. Nabisco) at their closing market price that day.

Mrs. McCann opens anywhere; minimums are $100:

- - - JONES - - - - McCANN - - - DILLON - - - McMURTRY - -
....................... ...............100 .................300 ...............400
..................500 ...............600 .................700 ...............850

................1500 ..............1600 ...............1700 ...........* 1800
.............* 3100 ...........* 1600 .............* 3200

Actual retail price: One share of Nabisco at the market close was $64.75; 40 shares are worth $2590, with Miss McMurtry the winner.

The new sweepstakes is announced. In the Medley Showcase, the items are:
* The Model 50 baby grand piano from Sohmer & Company
* Sterling silver candelabrum
* 3 oz. of Arpege perfume by Lanvin
* Barcalounger chair
* Polaroid model 300 camera kit with film and flash
* Roto-Mower riding lawn mower
* 3-pc. costume and precious jewelry

Next item: 65 pieces of hand-cut, blown and polished crystal, imported from Belgium includes decanters, flutes, goblets, tea glasses and more. Price authority: Jackson International, Pelham Manor, New York.

Mr. Dillon starts, and it's a one-bid item:
- - - JONES - - - - McCANN - - - DILLON - - - McMURTRY - -
................... .................. ..............* 750 ..............* 1500
...........* 950 ..........* 1501

Actual retail price: (Hold him down...) $1094, with Mr. Jones the winner, and he hit the bonus bell. He wins a cellarette with storage cabinets and a mini-bar, imported from France. Plus he now has a chance to pocket $1000. Three glasses of champagne are brought out on a display, each numbered. He is to take a sip of each (taking a sip of water after each, like they do in France) and tell which is the most expensive champagne. He picks number 2. The price: $2.69. Number 3 was $2.99, which meant that first glass was most expensive (value never determined). Mr. Jones said they were all flat. Bill takes a sip to verify (which he does with gusto). He agrees, so Mr. Jones will get a $250 cash prize.

Final item: a full-length coat of black mink. Price authority: Scaparelli Furs, New York.

Miss McMurtry starts with the opening asked to be at least $2000. Minimums are $100:

- - - JONES - - - - McCANN - - - DILLON - - - McMURTRY - -
..................... ..................... ................. .............2000
................2100 .............2200 ..........2300 ..............2600
................2700 .............2900 ..........3000 ..............3400
................3500 .............3700 ..........3900 ..............4000
................4100 .............4300 ..........4400 ..............4500
...............4600 ...........* 9000 .......* 4400 ...........* 4500
.............* 9100

Actual retail price: $6000, with Miss McMurtry the winner.

Final totals:
- - - JONES - - - - McCANN - - - DILLON - - - McMURTRY - -
...............6983 ....................0 ...................0  .............8590

Miss McMurtry is the new champion and will return next week to defend. Mr. Jones leaves with a four-week total of $30,750. Mrs. McCann and Mr. Dillon each receive an Admiral portable black-and-white TV. As Bill says goodnight, he throws one of the champagne glasses behind him--it hits the wall and statters! As the credits roll, Bill is seen with broom in hand cleaning up his mess.
