CBS Double Dare thread
« on: August 18, 2012, 09:13:59 PM »
The voting is closed.  Thanks to everybody for breaking the tie.  It was 7 votes in favor of Double Dare, so that's what will close out the 2012 Priceless Summer.  Let's go over the rules of the game.

The object is to identify people, places, and things from a series of 10 clues that start out arcane and vague, but get easier as the puzzle progresses.  For this quickie version, any person present on the forum may play; however, each person is allowed only one guess per puzzle.

I will start off each puzzle by giving the category and the first clue.  I will add new clues to the puzzle twice a day--one in the morning and one in the late afternoon/early evening.  No clues will be posted on Sundays unless somebody solves a puzzle before Sunday night bedtime.  If you think you know the subject of the puzzle, buzz in and post your answer in this thread.  (No PMs, please.  Only guesses in this thread will be accepted.)

If you are correct, you score an amount based on which number clue was the last to be revealed.  Each puzzle starts at $10,000 in fake cash and decreases $1,000 every time a new clue is given.

If, however, you buzz in and give an incorrect answer, you are out for the rest of that puzzle.

Once the correct answer is given, the remaining clues are revealed and a new puzzle is played, if time allows.

Good luck to all, and have fun!

======================================================

The subject of our very first puzzle is a PERSON.  And away we go!

*DD clue reveal*

$10,000:  He was an amateur boxer who competed in the 1988 Junior Olympics in Calgary.

The next clue will be posted on Monday morning--unless somebody is smart enough or lucky enough to get it on one clue. :-D

Wow... we certainly didn't waste any time getting to a right answer on this one.  Nicely played, jacaya.  Here were the rest of the clues:

$10,000:  He was an amateur boxer who competed in the 1988 Junior Olympics in Calgary.
$9,000:  In 2004, he revealed that he is a registered Republican.
$8,000:  He adopted his stage name from the nickname used by Brooklyn robber Kelvin Martin.
$7,000:  He has written or co-written a dozen books, including his autobiography, From Pieces to Weight.
$6,000:  He first got national exposure when he appeared on a 1998 Onyx track, "React".
$5,000:  Columbia Records dropped him before the release of his first album, "Power of the Dollar".
$4,000:  He was shot nine times in 2000--supposedly by Mike Tyson's former bodyguard.
$3,000:  His real name is Curtis James Jackson, III.
$2,000:  Named for his breakthrough album, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" marked his big-screen debut.
$1,000:  This New York rapper's "In da Club" was an instant #1 hit in 2002.

Another puzzle is being loaded in... and this time, we're going for an EVENT.  Everybody is back in the game, and here's the first clue:

*DD clue reveal*

$10,000:  Many people who witnessed it had planned to attend the coronation of England's King George VI.

The coronation of Elizabeth II.

Not it.  You're out for this puzzle.  For everybody else:

EVENT

$10,000:  Many people who witnessed it had planned to attend the coronation of England's King George VI.
$9,000:  Boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was born on the exact date that it happened.

The Hindenburg disaster?
The above is my opinion and mine alone.

To answer your questions: yes, I am a guy and yes, I have a face. (I also have the occasional spurt of weirdness.)

Man, you guys are too good!  GuyWithFace was the first one in with the answer, so he gets the fake check.  Here were the rest of the clues:

$10,000:  Many people who witnessed it had planned to attend the coronation of England's King George VI.
$9,000:  Boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was born on the exact date that it happened.
$8,000:  A mostly-true film about it starred George C. Scott and Anne Bancroft.
$7,000:  It happened at 7:25 PM on a Thursday in New Jersey.
$6,000:  Not surprisingly, a still photo of it appears on the cover of Led Zeppelin's debut album.
$5,000:  At a White House Correspondents' Dinner, Stephen Colbert compared the Bush Administration to it.
$4,000:  Many theories exist as to how it happened--some say lightning, some say a bomb.
$3,000:  Chicago reporter Herbert Morrison famously cried "Oh, the humanity!" when it happened.
$2,000:  Coincidentally, it happened almost exactly 25 years after the sinking of the Titanic.
$1,000:  The German airship was completely destroyed in less than 40 seconds.

All players are back in the game.  The next category is an ACTIVITY.  Everybody loves this category.  Let's see the first clue:

*DD clue reveal*

$10,000:  If three people participate in it at once, it's called a chouette.

I can think of a different French term... 8-O

Interesting.  Nobody took a guess on the first clue this time.  OK... at least everybody is still eligible.

ACTIVITY

$10,000:  If three people participate in it at once, it's called a chouette.
$9,000:  Since 1979, a world tournament for it has been held in Monte Carlo.
