PLAYOFF SEEDINGS POLL -- Expired
« on: May 23, 2006, 12:16:10 PM »
We have decided to have everyone vote on which bracket system is the best to use.  Here are your choices:

1.  Randomly

2.  Money leaders 1-8; point leaders 9-16

3.  Point leaders 1-8; money leaders 9-16

4.  Joe_Mello's suggestion:  http://www.golden-road.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=1559#forumpost1559

5.  Money bracket/Points bracket

6.  Write-in vote

Joe's original suggestion is awesome, and another thing he suggested, a money bracket and a points bracket, isn't too bad, either. My vote goes to Joe's original suggestion, though.

EDIT: After looking at it more, I still agree with Joe's original suggestion, but I think the seeding should go like this: the top eight in money get the money seeds, and the top eight in points that aren't in the top eight in money get the points seeds.

I'm voting for option 4, since I thought it up. :P It's also more interesting than #5.

My three main choices are 4, 5, and losing the single elimination format all together and making it a sprint.

I like the single elimination format, though. Makes for some good head-to-head matchups. Can you imagine me and Armadillo in the CSS Finals? The matchup to end all matchups!

OK, here's my write in vote.  Keep in mind that I 1) have NO shot of making the playoffs, and am thus pretty impartial here and 2) am a math geek.  I propose that all 16 players be ranked by a formula which equally rates them on their point score and their money score.

RANK SCORE = POINT AVERAGE + MONEY PERCENTAGE SCORE

The point average is the average already listed in the standings.  The top person right now has a score of 101, I believe.

The money percentage score comes from dividing everyone's money score by the current high score, to give a score up to 100.  Willy currently has the highest $$ total, and automatically scores 100.  Next would be PriceFan985.  If you divide his $$ score into Willy's, you get (723738/863718) = .842, so his Money Percentage Score is 84.2  Next, Gator would be (706398/863718) = 81.8.  Basically, everyone would be compared to the current money leader.

Then, all 16 players would be ranked according to this combined score.

Well, by now, I have either sold you on the idea, or totally lost you.  In either case, I welcome youe 2 cents.  Or message me if you want me to work this out for the current players.

Well, it's pretty much a given what the format will be... now it's just a question of how to seed them. I like my idea, but we'll see what happens. Below is the updated bracket with what will (most likely) be the new seeding format.

Let me throw out another idea...it's like sideshowPA's idea, but a bit simpler.  Determine the top 16 as now, then calculate everyone's PAM--point-adjusted money--score.  Simply multiply the points a person has earned (as a percentage) by their money score.  This gives a good balance between earning points and earning money and rewards those who did both well with a better seed.

Example:  Player A has a point average of 90 and total money winnings of $750,000.  Their PAM would be 0.9*750,000, or $675,000.

WRITE IN VOTE:

Ok, here's my suggestion and I believe it answers the questions as to what is fairest.

Robair did indeed declare Top 8 Points people got in first, but he obviously did not state anything as to rankings.

So, I have come up with an "adjusted/weighted" rank based upon the following formula:

Points Rank * .66 + $$$$ Rank * .33 = Adjusted Rank.

Obviously, the Top 8 and 8 get in no matter where they are, but it is the ADJUSTED RANK that determines seeding, regardless of any other rank, or whether they get in as an alternate.

I understand the cry for "adjusted rankings" and all, but there seems to be one fatal flaw: it involves a formula.  The CSS points involve a simple percentage and that's about as tough as things get.  If things get too complicated, people will get lost.  My option successfully separates and combines the two unique factions that make up the Top 16, creating a familiar but interesting set-up for the playoffs.

I don't like weighting points and cash together, for the simple reason that it hurts people (like me :-P ) who can't play every day.  Remember that points are normalized per appearance and money isn't.  Just because (as of last Friday) I had $40,000 less than Heelsrule1988 doesn't mean I'm worse at collecting money than him...you have to remember he's played twice as many games as me.

Of course, maybe we want to reward the people who play every day and I'm way off base, in which case you can safely ignore me.
