I put just as much effort into my reaction as the show put into this episode.
Torgo has left the building. John and I never really cared for the way he presented himself.

There was a time when the season premiere was a special show, a real special show, not a gimmicky "Wedding Shower Appreciation"-style show that has been prevalent in the past couple of seasons. I miss those days. If it wasn't for the "42 Years" signage around the set, this could have passed for a mid-season budget-saving show, because nothing says "Let's start the season off with a bang!' like playing Money Game first, am I right? Much better than playing 3 Strikes, Triple Play or Golden Road... or even Pay the Rent...

I'll be curious to see what the reaction will be to the new light box, but, for my money, it's too busy - those rotating Pricedown dollars (which appear FAR too frequently in the newer set designs and on-screen graphics, in my opinion) come off as very distracting and the smaller light patterns inside the box itself pale in comparison to the traditional light box. However, I do like the new logo introduction - far more spiffy looking than the previous one. However, I'm undecided if I like it appearing right at the top of the show... after 41 seasons of just panning the audience, it's sort of strange to have the logo on-screen right at the outset. I would suggest starting the opening shot tight on one of the Price logos around the audience and then pulling back into a sweep of the audience - might look better.

Today's contestants were a good bunch, lots of enthusiasm there which is always good to see. Too bad the games they played were nothing to write home about. As I said, Money Game has no business (in my view) opening up the season. Any Number, in honor of the 42nd year, should have started the show off, not shuffled off in the second half and it was too bad that neither car game was won today. It's in the Bag was also pretty tricky, I don't think I would have fared any better playing it. Do the Math is a neat enough concept, but, I'm still unsold on the reveal for the game, so, I'll reserve final judgment until I see how a loss is handled. Coming or Going was handled well, but, Secret "X" is a bit of a downer to play on the season premiere - the win is hinged too much on a random chance for it to be reliably exciting for a season premiere show, which is an overarching problem with this episode - it's the first show of the year, start it off with a bang, lots of winners, easier setups, more enjoyable games, not just something that looks and plays like any old show. Aside from the 40th season premiere, I feel like this is one aspect of the show the current staff doesn't really have a firm grasp on.

Danielle, the new model, seems like a decent addition to the cast of models. She's quite pretty and seemed to have the modelling knack.

The Emmy callbacks started to get a little tiresome. It was neat that they incorporated the statue into the opening shot, but, to keep inserting it and referencing it all over the show was a bit of overkill, in my view. The current administration won an Emmy and they're obviously very proud of it, but, to keep harping on it throughout the show came off somewhat as the show seeking validation (which, you would think that the winning of the Emmy would be validation enough). True, during the Barker years, there would sometimes be reference in some special set designs and host introductions to previous Emmy wins, but, I seem to recall them being more subtle and not repeatedly hammered home of "Look, look! We won an Emmy! Look!"

So, overall, a disappointing start to what is hopefully a good season.

So it's the Season 42 premiere and it was..............(blows raspberry)...........even to Mike-ish standards.

As of now, it seems weird to see new model Danielle being on the show for me, because I'm still up in the air considering what role she has: whether she replacing Amber, Manuela, or...........dare I say...........both, or if she pulling double duties for both Price and LMAD (since she's replacing Tiffany until she comes back from maternal leave, but after that, I really don't know). But for right now, I think that bridge will be crossed soon enough. I don't have anything against her, but the situation is quite the hair-puller for me.

Do The Math actually has potential and I really do like the game and how it's presented, so that's probably the one thing I can take from the premiere that's actually good.

The lineup and even the presentation of the premiere just seems so lazy, spiteful and, at times, rushed (mostly due to the intro) I didn't liked that the dings from A# (Winnable game, Drew? *scoffs*) were late like that. It was nice to see Secret X today, but setting up like that........SMH. Baggy could've gone better, though, but Wanda did won a tripcase.

Plus, I was pretty surprised that rules from CoG were still kept, but I'm sure how long that would be............I really thought that Tahiti was "coming".

Also, enough with the shoutouts already.........I know it's Drew's thing and all, but no one has the time (despite that it is a hour-long show) to hear the DTM winner describing his family tree.

Bottom line: 2 wins, no car wins, and cheap Showcases...........(sarcastically): Richards is really pulling out all the stops today.  :rollold: You know, for someone who won a Daytime Emmy, you'd think he would at least go all out on this one...............Instead, he had to play it safe. Hell, at least he could've put up Rent instead of Baggy. Hopefully, the rest of the week won't be like this. Or worse than this.

Instead of rehashing the same complaints, I'm going to point out no Scott is the likely cause of this:

Just... lol.

But really, going back to rehashing... playing X instead of Cliff, but then put it up top? These guys just don't get a season premiere at all, which is odd after S40.

EDIT: Yes. The purple border was fine, but the rotating digitally animated $ were a bit too much, then the logo was too colorful in the animations too. And I want to see Drew coming out, not an animation of the logo opening. It was too much.
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...

Why did they feel the need to add those logo transitions and animations in the intro? The logos were exceedingly distracting (especially how they were angled), whereas the new light border is lifeless and the spinning dollar signs on the sides are exceedingly distracting (especially if one watches in SD).

How does The Price Is Right begin its 42nd year on CBS? With Money Game and It's In The Bag, of course! Other than Do The Math, the lineup was rather boring and devoid of any big-ticket prizes.

Do The Math...is alright, I suppose. The gameplay is fine, but I do not like the fact it is completely electronic, nor do I find the cash bonus to be particularly necessary.

I had expected the budget to have been saved up for the Showcases, and said as much in chat...only for all of us to be surprised at not only the prizes but also the fact that one barely passed $22,000 and the other was just under $29,000.

Really, the only hints that this was in fact a new season were Drew constantly saying "It's our 42nd season!" and the "42years" sign on the large dollar sign between the Turntable and Door #1. Further, the displaying of the Daytime Emmy as "We won an Emmy! Appreciate us!" felt very out-of-place on a season premiere that was undeserving of its presence.

For some reason, the split-screen credits listed Jennifer Mullin as (an?) Executive Producer. Someone should look over the full credits once CBS posts the episode.

Overall, a 2/6 with a new game and almost nothing else going for it.

I really hope the light border looks better in HD. I had to watch the show in SD today, and lord was that border distracting, especially on the sides. All you could see were the edges of the dollar signs, which was very irritating.

If they would just recreate the old Barker light border in HD...

This was an unimpressive season premiere. I wanted to see something along the lines of 4 car Race Game, starting things off with a bang instead of a whimper. I did like Do The Math, however.

Hey, if we just show the Daytime Emmy we won on camera as much as possible, people will know we're awesome to the point we don't have to do anything to make this stand out from an average show, right? Righhht.....

Seriously, this was an average Bag show. I understand not every season premiere has to have huge games on it, but if you're going to have normal games, at least make some of them easy. Money, Any and Secret X can all be manipulated to be easy. It would have been nice to see at least one of them be that way today. (On the other hand, it was a nice surprise to see Secret X for only the 2nd time since the beginning of February.) Or even have the back half of Money actually be 42. And then to have normal SCs after that was a surprise too. It just makes the show look cheap, especially when they're trying to hype things up like the show is a big deal and it's just not.

I do enjoy Do the Math and think its concept is a unique spin on ME that will be quick to play (timing it at 3.5). As for the opening, way too busy and flashy. Soon the set will be that way too.

Mike should watch the season 35 premiere and see how a season premiere is supposed to be done.
He has. He needs to rewatch his own work and watch the Season 40 Premiere. That was great.

This was kind of astonishing how terrible this episode was to serve as a season premiere. A season premiere doesn't need to have a Big 3, but if it doesn't, it needs to at least have some high-end prizes (namely a nice car) somewhere in the show that isn't the showcase.

The icing on top was Secret X not being setup for a slam dunk win. That seemed like the perfect way to end a show that they certainly didn't seem to care about.

Let's see...they've got five models, four of which have been with the show for at least three seasons. They've got a nice family dynamic. And what's the best way to showcase that nice dynamic as you start the 42nd season than by only having one of the models there? I mean seriously, Danielle can cut her teeth and practice for LMAD on other shows this season (she can really do it on LMAD). It makes no sense to start the season out with only one returning model.

I'd call this the worst season premiere ever, but I haven't seen them all to make such a declarative statement. But boy howdy, did they do absolutely everything they could possibly do to get this wrong. At least they didn't play Pathfinder or Stack.

Has he really (and by really, I mean, thoroughly) watch the S40 premiere? IMHO, that's highly doubtful, because if he did, this wouldn't be the end result. I mean, it was cool to see Do The Math and (temporary) new model Danielle, but I think he was too concerned about the show's budget instead of trying to make the premiere entertaining. Just adding a new game and a allegedly new model does not make it special.

But you're right............he needs to re-watch that premiere (but thoroughly) and many others before it.

As someone who's been to multiple tapings, I think you would agree that any PiR show has the potential to be special.  In my mind, the most "special" shows I've been to were the 2010 ACM Awards and Earth Day shows.  Yet the one "special" show that I've never had the opportunity to partake in is a season premiere.  Now...the premiere show--the first chapter of a brand-new year--is supposed to be something that all of us--myself included--would look forward to watching.  Expensive cars, lots of cash, you name it--it's there.  The opening to a new PiR season is supposed to be full of joy, wonder, and excitement...right?

Today, we got the exact opposite for a season premiere.  Instead of an airing full of higher-end goodies and lots of genuine excitement, we got something that resembled a budget-saving mid-season episode that was lackadaisically put together with no hint of anything that would be considered "special" (save for Do The Math, which looked pretty darn cool).  But...for God's sakes, if they REALLY wanted to do a season premiere, they should've put something like 3X or Trips, but come on, man...MONEY GAME!?!  Topping it off, none of the cars even broke $25K in price, and for me, that was a big turn-off.

The only saving grace for this clunker of a premiere show, however, were the contestants; we had some pretty excited folks get on stage.  Despite this, this was one of those premiere shows that you would want to tag for deletion on your DVRs.
I just wanted to drop you a note and thank you for your love, affection and loyalty to me, drew, the models and.... The Price is Right....thank you for being such a "Loyal Friend & True". -Rich Fields (in an e-mail sent to me on 3/17/2010)

I support The Price is Right...even if nobody I know likes Drew Carey.

Not a fan of Do the Math. I know it's meant to be a quickie, but the whole + or - thing could throw some contestants off because all you really have to do is figure out whether the first prize is more expensive or less expensive than the second prize. I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone loses the game because they got confused by that.
