Clarification:

Please DO NOT include Catch 21 in your evaluation of Gambit.  Catch 21 has a different format (particularly the bonus round), and will get its own entry later on.

Thanks. :-)

I was never crazy about Stump the Schwab. I'm going with one of the best game shows of ALL TIME: 11-0 to Wheel...of...Fortune!

It's been years since I've seen Gambit & The Newlywed Game. I'm going with 7-4 in favor of Newlywed Game,

I like Stump the Schwab.  It's a great sports-themed game show, probably the best game show ESPN ever made.  But Wheel...it's one of the quintessential play-along game shows, one of the real classic long-runners.  Some might say too long, or that perhaps it could use with a new host.  And it's been on so long that it's almost become something to parody, I feel.  But it has enough pull to give Schwab what it expected for winning a play-in game:  a quick exit from the tournament.  Wheel of Fortune 8-3

I've never been a fan of The Newlywed Game.  I can't put my finger on why, whether it's the hosting, or just the format.  But it doesn't strike me as particularly good, just memorable for the various gaffes/entendres that get thrown about.  Gambit...I hadn't seen this until just now, only having seen Catch 21 before, but I like the stakes, I like the idea of a blackjack-themed game show (casino-themed shows just seem to be something I like, such as High Rollers), and of course, Wink Martindale.  (For clarification, I do think I like the format of Gambit better than Catch 21, though I don't get the hate for the latter, but I won't expound further after the clarification by Jordanar18.)  Now it's only an 8-9 matchup, but it's time for an upset.  Gambit 9-2

WoF vs Stump the Schwab: I liked Stump the Schwab when it was on, but Wheel of Fortune is an all-time classic.  It and Price were my favorites growing up.  America's Game has to win by a landslide.  Wheel of Fortune wins 10-1.

Newlywed Game vs Gambit: Newlywed Game is fun, risque, and Bob Eubanks was just the perfect host for it.  It's had some poor posting since then, and GSN hasn't made it nearly as good as the original, but the Eubanks version alone carries the show.  I really haven't seen much of Gambit to give a true evaluation, but Newlywed Game gets the win.  Newlywed Game wins 7-4.

FIRST TIER:

This is a no-brainer here. Wheel of Fortune gets it 10-1.

SECOND TIER:

I like the blackjack theme and rules of Gambit, and the legendary Wink Martindale did a stunning job as host, but The Newlywed Game is just too classic to lose to a show that hardly gets featured in game show blooper videos. The Newlywed Game gets it 8-3.

How good could have the Schwab have been if it had 16 years of mind numbing formatting?
Wheel 8, Schwab 3
We have another teaser. While it is Wink's bracket, the Newlyweds gave some amazing memories
...dang... Newlywed's 6, Gambit 5

My votes:

Wheel vs. Schwab:

I like Stump the Schwab.  I really do.  And actually I don't like Wheel anymore.  But looking at it objectively, I have to give this one to Wheel.  Too much longevity and popularity to even compare to Schwab.

Wheel of Fortune, 6-5.

Newlywed Game vs. Gambit:

I'm not really a big fan of Gambit.  It just seems like too much luck is involved for a game show, but I will give credit to Wink as its host.  Newlywed, however, was fun to watch and has produced some of the best game show answers in history.  I don't care about the revivals, which have been comparatively unwatchable.

Newlywed Game, 8-3.

Could you clarify which revivals, sir? By my count, there have been six or seven distinct revivals or overhauls since the original series ended in 1974.
The above is my opinion and mine alone.

This set is over, and let's see who won...

No surprise in the first match-up...

Wheel of Fortune stomps The Schwab, 8.24 to 2.76.

And the second match-up was the closest one so far.  Would there finally be an upset?

Gambit annuls The Newlywed Game, 5.94 to 5.06.

Our first upset!  Next matches are coming right up!

Loved Scrabble, hated Dating Game. Most relationship shows just don't do it for me.

Scrabble 11-0.

Hot Potato was OK, but when they switched to Celebrity, it was terrible. Blockbusters was great with Cullen, not so good with Rafferty. I'm still going

Blockbusters 11-0. Potato would have had a couple of points if they didn't go Celebrity.

As much as Scrabble is a classic, I felt NBC had gotten too cheap with the 1993 series. Coupled with the 1990 pilot, and I cannot give this a 10 or 11. The Dating Game has longevity on its side, plus two masterful hosts in Jim Lange and Chuck Woolery, but not much more. 9-2 in favor of Reg Grundy.

As much as it may be amusing to pile on Hot Potato for adding Celebrity, before that point of no return it was a rather good show. As was Blockbusters, in both of its forms. 7-4 in favor of Goodson-Todman.
