I don't see a problem with advising not to overbid. If anything, I'd have a problem with encouraging contestants to go high, as any overbid (no matter how big or small) is always an overbid.

Well, larzb (aka Christopher), let me first say: Congratulations on your winnings! I agree with Adam and I say that it kinda sucks that the results would pre-empt at the most ridiculous of times (Not that I'm one of "those" people who are known to complain about that).

Second.....
Thanks.

If you watch the behind the scenes on YouTube, you will see them giving instructions to the Showcase contestants.  It is said to both contestants and before any bidding is done.

I don't think there was anything out of line with his statements, anymore than Drew's comments while contestants are spinning.

At least I now know why I don't hear the SC instructions anymore (but I'm guessing that's more of a Bob thing than a Drew thing). Although, a good amount of things have changed ever since Drew became host. Yet, it doesn't make too much sense if the director wanted you to not overbid.

I, personally, don't have a problem with this.  I noticed a slightly similar notification on Wheel of Fortune this week - although this one was on the air.  At the beginning of a Before and After puzzle, Pat reminded the contestants to pay attention and to remember the category while playing and solving.

I'm kind of surprised that the show hasn't made Daniel Goddard a/the permanent male model.  He's appeared on the show for three seasons now, and he has decent modeling skills.  Why they're going to the trouble of having another model search is beyond me.  It seems that if they keep the current Rachel-plus-one rotation, they could probably work around the Y&R taping schedule and have Daniel on the show "permanently".

I might be crazy, but was there no model at the back of the stage during the Double Prices trip reveal? It looked....odd.

Third, the director actually advised you not to overbid? I have a serious problem with that personally.
This man is presumably the same one who told the contestants during the behind-the-scenes video "One of you has won, and one of you has not. If you are the winner, just run to your prizes." The statement related by Christopher is just as disturbing as the one we all heard being spoken.

That is standard procedure on Wheel. Telling your contestants "We would prefer it if you do not make bids that result in a Double Overbid, because we do not like sad endings." is quite different.
The above is my opinion and mine alone.

To answer your questions: yes, I am a guy and yes, I have a face. (I also have the occasional spurt of weirdness.)

I guess I don't see the problem.  If they wanted to save money, they would say, "Try to win both by bidding as close as possible."  Telling contestants not to overbid is just reinforcing the rules and making it more likely there will be a winner.  They are not giving any pricing information or strategy. YMMV

You guys are reading way too far into this. As I take it, he basically just means don't overbid because you are not eligible to win if you do. You can't assume every contestant watches the show on a regular basis enough to know that it's whoever is closest to the actual retail price of their showcase without going over. He was just reiterating this fact.

Congrats Christopher! Nice score on Safe Crackers, and great job winning your showcase as well!

This man is presumably the same one who told the contestants during the behind-the-scenes video "One of you has won, and one of you has not. If you are the winner, just run to your prizes." The statement related by Christopher is just as disturbing as the one we all heard being spoken.

"Disturbing" is quite harsh wording. I don't understand why it is such a big deal.

That is standard procedure on Wheel. Telling your contestants "We would prefer it if you do not make bids that result in a Double Overbid, because we do not like sad endings." is quite different.

It's not exactly fair to paraphrase someone else paraphrasing another person. We don't know the exact wording and I can only imagine it was not as blunt as that. It was probably something simple like "Don't overbid on your showcase because if you both do you both will lose."
"Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better." - Sydney J. Harris

“For the premiere of season 30, CBS wanted to do a special primetime show. However, they asked that we also add a gimmick or a twist to make it truly special. I came up with the suggestion of taking the show on the road for the first time in its history." - Roger Dobkowitz

For a time, I was the person who briefed the Showcase contestants. There's no set script that I (or any production personnel who has briefed the Showcase contestants) had to follow -- and naturally, each person will phrase things differently -- but here was how I started my speech:

"The object is to be the person who bids closest to the actual retail total of their showcase without going over. Do not go over. If you go over, you cannot win. The person who bids closer to the actual retail total of their showcase without going over wins the prizes in their showcase."

I then immediately went on to explain the Double Showcase Winner parameters, so it's not like I was trying to influence the contestants one way or the other.

It's a huge bummer when the show ends with a double overbid, and nobody on the staff enjoys it. Reminding the contestants not to overbid is just a more specific way of saying "don't lose." It's presumably the same reason "Jeopardy!" reminds the contestants right before Final Jeopardy! to write their response in the form of a question.

I wish the second screen video was still up -- I thought I remembered seeing a snippet of the Showcase briefing in there. Assuming I did see part of the briefing, nothing jumped out to me as being over the line.

Golden Road: This was clearly setup for today's contestant to play for the Corvette. $691 was the obvious price for the smoker. Beachcomber hot tubs don't usually approach $10000 so the $9967 was out and prices in Golden Road don't usually include the same number in back to back digits so the $9667 was unlikely. It's ashamed the Corvette wasn't won but it was a treat to see it. And the Apple iPhone was a nice contestants row prize.

Double Prices: Nice win of a nice Savannah trip.

Safe Crackers: The laptop was the same 1 used in Shopping Spree yesterday and computers are rarely under $600 so that was an easy win.

Range Game: Fantastic win of a nice bedroom.

Make Your Move: Pretty easy win. The Kayak wouldn't be my favorite prize but the Portland trip was nice.

Let em Roll: Bummer of a way to end. Unfortunate the Honda CR-Z wasn't won.

Showcases: The Kia Soul showcase was the better showcase and it's too bad it wasn't won. And I see nothing wrong with what the director apparently told today's contestants. Depending on how you interpret it it's either encouragement for the contestants or just a friendly reminder that not going over is required to win.

Lineup: Pretty good: Golden Road is a GREAT lead off hitter. Safe Crakers,Range Game, and Make Your Move are all always fun. Let em Roll also makes a pretty good closer. The ONLY reason I don't say this lineup is great or fantastic is because it included the game Double Prices and that's a big negative.

Overall: A pretty good lineup and a 4 for 6 show made this a very good show. Either a car being won or the removal of Double Prices from the lineup would have made this a great show.
Adjustments that should be made to pricing games to make them fairer: Secret X: Add a 3rd SP so that perfect pricing ensures a win. 1/2 Off: Add a 4th set of SPs so that perfect pricing ensures a win. Master Key: Add 2 more SPs so that perfect pricing ensures a win. Rat Race: Add 2 more SPs so that perfect pricing ensures a win.

The following pricing games should be retired because there's no way or no easy way to make them fair: Spelling Bee, Plinko, Punch a Bunch, Pass the Buck, Let em Roll, 3 Strikes.

The following retired pricing games should be revived: $uper $aver, Give or Keep, Buy or Sell, Hurdles, Bump, Penny Ante, Credit Card, On the Spot, Split Decision, Add em Up, Walk of Fame, Barker's Markers, Magic Number.

While it was nice to see GR set up fairly to get all the way to the end, can we please cut the garbage with always having a low number be right for the big prize?

I hardly ever watch anymore, but if this statement is true, isn't it reasonable to expect that a new LFaT would have picked up on this trick by now?  And I do apologize if this is a repetitive reply.  Too tired to read below.

"Disturbing" is quite harsh wording. I don't understand why it is such a big deal.
Perhaps it truly is not, but my reaction was how I felt immediately after reading it. In fairness, I probably should not have been so rash in responding.

Just an FYI. The TV is $2,600, the Vegas Trip is $3,158 and the West Wight Potter is $26,995.  The sailboat is the 19' Premium Sport Edition, which makes it more expensive.

And with that said, the modeling totals have been adjusted to $67,298 for Daniel and $117,582 for Rachel.  I have also found two other matching boats, in #6603K and #6705K, for which the latter also had a trip to Las Vegas.  I have adjusted the modeling totals in my Excel file for those two episodes as well.
