TPiR Million Dollar Spectacular (February 5, 2003)
« on: March 25, 2016, 11:03:55 AM »
Here is a recap of the very first MDS.

From this recap forward, I'm going to be doing a different recap style.

It's the very first Million Dollar Spectacular! Someone tonight could spin the wheel and win $1,000,000!

Let's get started!

Sonya Alvarez (20s. Brunette. Hispanic), COME ON DOWN!
Sarah Williams (20s. Blonde), COME ON DOWN!
Keith Purcell (30s. Black hair. Wearing glasses and a Navy uniform), COME ON DOWN!
Cheryl James (30s. African-American. Wearing a silver hat), COME ON DOWN!

You are the first four contestants on THE PRICE IS RIGHT $1,000,000 SPECTACULAR!

Bob enters from the audience! Could it be...

Let's not jump to conclusions. Rather, let's introduce our first item up for bids tonight!

It's his and hers golf equipment from Jazz Golf!

Let's start the bidding, shall we?

Cheryl bids $1,250
Keith bids $2,000
Sarah bids $850
Sonya bids $1,251

And the price is... $1,992, which means Sonya is our first winner!

She comes up onstage to reveal...

GOLDEN ROAD!

My suspicions were right! We are kicking off the first ever MDS with Golden Road!

Sonya says she's always dreamed of playing this game!

The Golden Road begins with a can of tomatoes, which can help her win...

Beautiful luggage from skyway!

If Sonya wins those, which I am fairly sure she will, she will go to the next step in the Golden Road, which is...

A fun (and cute-looking) motorscooter from Emsar!

If she wins that, she will go to the end of the Golden Road and at the end of the Golden Road, there is always a really, really great prize. Since this is a primetime special, tonight's prize will be no exception. Tonight's prize at the end of the Golden Road is more than...
.
.
.
$88,000!

What is it!?

It is a new... MOTORHOME!

A bee-you-tiful Storm 31A motorhome from Fleetwood! It's 32 feet in length, got a 6.8-litre engine, slide-out galley, bedroom, and all sorts of features!

Will this be Sonya's home-away-from-home? Let's find out!

The tomatoes are $.82, so we start with the luggage.

The last 2 numbers are 9 and 6.

Is it $896 or $296?

Sonya knows right off the bat that it's $896.

It is... $896! Onto the scooter!

The price is $1-95. Is it the 8, 9, or 6? Chances are it's not the 9, though.

She says... 9.

SONYA! WTH?!

Needless to say, it's not the nine. It was $1,895.

Oh, Sonya. You said you always dreamed of playing this game, so what do you do? Botch it on the second prize because you- Ah, she probably didn't know about the "no repeating digit" rule, so I'll let her off the hook and give her the benefit of the doubt. Plus, she gets to spin the wheel, so that's a consolation.

BTW, the price of the RV was deduced to be $88,174, so it's not a total loss.

Well, that was not a very good start to our first MDS, but there's still lots of time and games left.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grant Kelly (20s. Brunette. Wearing a Minnesota T-shirt), COME ON DOWN!

Our next item is a fancy hi-tech home theater system! It's got a DVD/CD home theater system, five satellite speakers, and a subwoofer. Also, it features an LCD panel with bult-in cable TV tuner!

I want that.

Grant bids $2,750
Cheryl bids $2,000
Keith bids $2,100
Sarah bids $2,751

The price is $2,294, which gives it to Keith, says he has been in the Navy for 13 years and is stationed in Nevada!

Let's get that bad memory of what happened in Golden Road, shall we?

Bob takes Keith over to the Giant Price Tag and shows him that he could win a...

NEW CAR!

It's the spiffy Chrysler 300m! Looks like a stylish car, but is a luxury sedan in reality!

Looks like Keith will be playing... One Away! One of the harder car games (and a popular one for primetime episodes, too).

The car is not $38,574. Hey, it's nice, but not THAT nice. Each number is one away from- ah, we all know the rules of One Away, do we not?

Keith changes the price to $29,485. Hmm, seems like a reasonable price.

Does he have one number right? HONK!
Does he have two numbers right? HONK!
Does he have three number right? HONK!
Does he have four numbers right? HONK!

Now, the moment of truth. Does Keith have all five numbers right?
.
.
.
.
.
Silence...

He has one wrong, which makes this rather difficult.

He decides to change the 8 to the 6 to make it $29,465.

Uh-oh. The audience does not approve. But they may be wrong, let's see.

Is the first number a 2?

YES!

Is the next number a 9?

YES!

Is the next number a 4?

YES!

If the next number is 6, Keith will be driving back to Nevada in that fancy car!

It is a...

6!!!!!

KEITH WINS THE CAR!!! He was right and the audience was wrong! He wins the Chrysler 300M!

This is currently only the second time that One Away has ever been won in primetime. The first time was on a 1986 Special.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kathryn (20s. Blonde), COME ON DOWN!

The video started while Grant was giving his bid, but the IUFB was his and hers watches.

Kathryn bids $950
Sarah bids $1,200
Grant bids $1,400
Cheryl finally gets a chance to one-up by bidding $1,401

The price of the watches is... $2,320! Come on up onstage, Cheryl!

Cheryl dances over to the Big Price Tag to give Bob a kiss.

What can she win?

Well, Cheryl just might win up to $25,000 playing Punch-a-Bunch (though the odds of her winning the full $25k aren't that great)!

But if Cheryl wants to start punching out holes to get the money inside (or rather the slips), she needs to correctly guess higher or lower on four small prizes!

We're starting off with an interactive, talking globe. Could come in handy for Cheryl's kids if she has any.

Is it higher or lower than $170?

She says lower.

It is... $140! That's one punch for her!

Our next prize is a collection of household cleaning products from Libman.

Are they higher or lower than $11?

Without batting an eye, she says higher.

It is... $17! Two punches!

Next up, we have a comfortable space heater. Use it to keep a room nice and toasty during the frigid winter months.

Higher or lower than $130?

She says lower.

It is... $100!

She has three punches! Let's make it four with a man's electric shaver with kit.

Is it higher or lower than $140?

She immediately guesses lower.

It is... $113! She has all four punches!

After she does her punching, Bob reaches into the first hole to find that she has... $100.

She throws it away, as would I.

Her next punch contains... another $100.

Again, she gives it back.

Punch #3 is... $1,000!

Against some audience member's objections, she goes on! Bob chides her a little bit after pulling the last slip out, saying that $1,000 is a lot of money to give back.

Bob looks at the slip and groans! Uh-oh... did she do the right thing giving back that $1,000?

Well, Cheryl gave up $1,000 and wound up with...
.
.
.
$25,000!!!

Against the odds, she has won the full $25,000!!! And she is ecstatic (well, who wouldn't be?)!

As with One Away, this is also currently only the second time that Punch-a-Bunch has ever been won in primetime. The first time was on a 1986 Special.

First Showcase Showdown coming up next!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here we go with our first Showcase Showdown! $1.00 gets you $1,000 and a bonus spin. $1.05 or $1.15 gets you $5,000! $2.00 gets $1,000,000!

Sonya: $2,888
Cheryl: $27,690
Keith: $31,759

Sonya's first spin is... $.85! And she stays!

Cheryl's first spin is... $.45, so she needs to spin again. Her next spin lands on $.15 and $.60 isn't enough, but she's leaving with $25,000 in cash!

Keith's first spin is... $.5, so he obviously has to spin again. His next spin lands on $.60 and $.65 isn't enough, but he's got a new car!

Sonya is excited to be going to the showcases! Maybe she can redeem herself for that Golden Road loss!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taylor Monsen (Female. 20s. Hispanic), COME ON DOWN!

Our next item up for bids is a very comfortable-looking four-poster bed from Magnussen Home! Comes with a mattress set from Bemco.

Taylor bids $1,575
Kathryn bids $2,300
Sarah gives a unique bid of $2,524
Grant bids $2,600

And the actual retail price of the bed is... $2,799! It's Grant's turn to come up onstage!

Grant goes to school at the University of Minnesota and came all the way out to Los Angeles to be on the show! What do we have to offer him to thank him for coming all this way?

It's a folding camping trailer! A unique-looking, A-shaped, Chalet Alpine folding camping trailer, comes with a dinette, double bed, and water pump!

Hey, that's the second RV offered tonight! First was a motorhome in Golden Road, now we have a trailer! That ever happened before?

Anyway, Grant will be playing Squeeze Play. The trailer is not $88,313, so he needs to take out either the first 8, first 3, or the 1.

Hmmm, this is a bit of a toughie. All prices look reasonable.

Well, his group says take out the 1, so that's what he's going to do.

The 1 is removed to make a price of $8,833. Is it the right price?

It is.... $8,313! Darn!

Sorry, Grant. Looks like you're gonna have to stick with regular tents for now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before we go on, Bob has a chat with Sarah, who is from Fresno State, telling her to look to another group rather than her own for help. LOL.

Charmin Lindholm (20s. Blonde), COME ON DOWN!

Our next item is a cool selection of power tools from Craftsman!

Charmin bids $2,200
Taylor bids $2,100
Kathryn bids $1,700
Sarah bids $2,201

The tools are... $2,050, which gives it to Kathryn!

As with Grant, Kathryn came from clear across the country to be here, Upstate New York in this case! What do we have for her?

We have a... NEW CHEVROLET SUBURBAN!!! It's black, shiny, and very roomy!

Yikes! It's That's Too Much! Good luck, Kathryn.

After Bob coaches her to shout "That's Too Much!" properly, we begin.

Our first price is $15,891.

She goes on.

Next up is $18,156.

Go on.

Next, $24,498.

Kathryn wants to keep going, so we do.

$26,871.

Keep going, she says.

$31,256.

Kathryn seems unsure for a moment, then decides to go on one more.

$34,005.

She seems like she wants to go one more, but "THAT'S TOO MUCH!" she yells, even though she sounds and looks really unsure about it.

Is it too much?
.
.
.
NO!

It was $37,095, she should have gone one more to $39,901! OUCH! And she regrets it, too. Should have listened to your gut, Kath.

Well, no car for Kathryn, but at least she gets to spin the wheel!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Johnson (20s, like 4 of our previous 5 constants. Black hair. Wearing a baseball cap), COME ON DOWN!

Our final IUFB is a treadmill from NordicTrack

David bids $1,300
Sarah bids $1,900. Hopefully she wins. She's been stuck here ever since the beginning.
Charmin bids $1,351
Taylor bids $2,250

The actual retail price is... $2,600, which means Taylor wins!

Darn, I was hoping for Sarah. Oh, well.

Taylor joins Bob on the turntable and gives him a kiss. What do we have for her?

It's an exciting tour of Europe! A 15-night tour of London, Paris, and Amsterdam, courtesy of Northwest Airlines! It's a great prize worth... $8,325!

Huh, I thought it would be a LOT more expensive, like $14,000 or $15,000.

Taylor's gonna be playing another challenging game: Grocery Game! What are the products we have for her tonight?

We have Glad drawstring bags, Wyler's soft drink mix, Barbasol shaving cream, Smucker's jam, and Wheat Nuts.

Taylor starts with the jam.

How much does she buy?

She decides on 6.

One is $3.35, how much is 6?

Six are... $20.10! Just like that, she wins that great European trip!

Great job, Taylor!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here we go with our second Showcase Showdown! Can we give away $1,000,000? Let's see if we can.

Kathryn: $2,050
Grant: $2,799
Taylor: $10,925

Kathryn's first spin is... $.30. She spins again and it lands on... $.60! For a total of $.90!

Grant's first spin is... $.75, so he needs to spin again. His next spin lands on $.55 and $1.30 is way too much, but he's leaving with a nice bed.

Taylor's first spin is... $.65, so she needs to spin again. Her next spin lands on $.15 and $.80 isn't enough, but she's got a great trip to Europe!

Kathryn is off to the showcases!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sonya is our Top Winner and Kathryn is the Runner Up!

Our first showcase is overflowing with prizes designed to help you throw the world's best party!

We're gonna start with party beverages, served from this charming 3-piece bar set!

And the world's best party has games, so get ready to play in a great game room!

First up, we have Ms. PacMan and Galaga arcade game from Namco!

Next up, a fun air hockey table from Lightning!

Finally, a RollerCoaster Tycoon pinball machine from Sterns!

Next up, fill the air with party music, played on a beautiful baby grand piano from Samick!

The world's greatest party will attract guests from all over, so pick them up from the airport in your new bright and white CADILLAC DEVILLE!

Sonya decides to bid (as would I) on it and she bids $49,000 even.

My bid: Same.

Now, here's Kathryn's showcase.

Her showcase features great things to do when it's cold outside!

First up, you can stay inside, get warm by the fire, and watch your favorite shows on your new electric fireplace entertainment unit from Dimplex! Features a 36" color TV.

Next up, how about a hot dip in a new spa from Beachcomber?!

Or maybe it's time to plan for a vacation to the Bahamas for a 7-night stay at the Radisson Cable Beach Resort courtesy of American Airlines!

Once in the Bahamas, take in the hot sun aboard a new ski boat from Mastercraft! This 23-foot X30 boat comes with a 350-horsepower MCX engine and V-hull design! Trailer included.

Kathryn bids $62,180.

My bid: $58,500.

We are going to start with Kathryn. The actual retail price of her showcase is... $81,333! A difference of $19,153.

Over to Sonya. She bid $49,000. The actual retail price of her showcase is... $68,287! She begins getting excited! It's a difference of... $19,287!

$134 too far! Kathryn wins! Whoa, that was close!

As Kathryn runs off to celebrate, Bob consoles Sonya, who is smiling but is obviously disappointed and with good reason to be. Two chances to win big, but she fell short. Just wasn't her night, was it? Oh well. At least she has some golf stuff and a set of luggage.

Kathryn's Winnings:
Power Tools:      $2,050
Her Showcase:      $81,333
Total:         $83,383

Kathryn's Potential Winnings:
Power Tools:      $2,050
$1,000 Bonus:      $1,000
Chevrolet Suburban:   $37,095
$1,001,000
Her Showcase:      $81,333
Sonya's Showcase:   $68,287
Total:         $1,190,765

I like it.  It allows you to stay in suspense before you scroll down and reveal the answer.

That's all well and good, but this thread hasn't been posted in in over half a year.  Please don't do this again. -Steve

Ecclesiastes 12:13
