The Las Vegas Raiders
« on: March 27, 2017, 05:38:05 PM »
The Raiders have gotten the greenlight to move from Oakland (#6 DMA) to Las Vegas (#40 DMA). They needed at least 24 of the 31 other teams to approve. The only team casting a "no" vote is Miami.

So it will be the LA Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders? This is going to be an interesting era for the NFL, if only because Vegas already has an NHL team (the Golden Knights, IIRC) ready to go next season.

The Raiders will play in Oakland in '17 and '18 while a stadium is built for them in Las Vegas.

See, that makes absolutely no sense at all! Then again, didn't a similar situation happen with the old Houston Oilers (who are now the Tennessee Titans) when they played one season in the Astrodome after their own relocation announcement, then the next one in Memphis, and the one after that in Nashville (but at Vanderbilt)?

Yes.

Then-owner Bud Adams (RIP) announced at the end of the 1995 season that the team would be relocating to Nashville for the 1998 season but would remain in Houston for the next couple of years. The 1996 season happens and hardly anyone shows up to the games, so Adams and the NFL decide it best to go ahead and move the team to Tennessee, playing in Memphis and Nashville (Vanderbilt Stadium) for the 1997 and 1998 seasons, respectively, as the Tennessee Oilers until Adelphia Coliseum (now Nissan Stadium) could be built -- which opened for the 1999 season and marked the beginning of the Tennessee Titans era and a Super Bowl run that same season.

Given what happened in Houston in 1995, I, too, am surprised the Raiders are staying in Oakland until their Las Vegas stadium is built. Perhaps they will have better luck getting fans to show up than the Oilers did, but that remains to be seen.

So the question now is, what will become of the A's? With the Warriors moving back across the Bay to San Francisco, now would be the perfect time to draw up a ballpark plan to ensure that at least one team remains in Oakland for the long term.

Question is: with the reputation of Raiders fans, how much violence will be at the final game in Oakland?

Probably more than there was in L.A. in 1994.
