Showing that the oddsmakers donít know squat, 13-point favorite Atlanta loses at home to Miami, 20-17. They led 17-0 at halftime then just plain phoned in the second half.

And then a week later, they lose the Super Bowl rematch in which they never had a chance this time.

Yep. Dan Quinn was stressing "All gas, no brakes." They could never find the accelerator.

Atlanta halts their losing streak with a win at the Jets. Not the prettiest victory, but given the weather conditions and Atlantaís erratic play of late, to be expected.

At this point, I feel like the Redskins have established that they're a good but not great team. Albeit one wracked by injuries, the victim of self inflicted mistakes as well as misfortune. Nonetheless, all of this came together in today's loss to the Cowboys. It feels like it firmly sets the Redskins as the number 3 team in the NFC East, a reasonably talented also ran who has run afoul of the fact that it's simply not their year.

In other words, it's a prettier version of typical Redskins teams from the past 20+ years or so. Sure, things are better this year than they are most of those years, but they're still going in the wrong direction and feel clearly inferior to multiple other teams in the division. Sure, there's about half the season left, but as of now, they don't feel like they're going to catch up to the Eagles and are at best at parity with the Cowboys.

All of this is a shame, as it feels like it is wasting what may be Kirk Cousin's final year in Washington.

Carolina has been averaging 98 rushing yards per game. Today against Atlanta: 201. Two missed scoring opportunities for the Falcons (both passing attempts to Julio Jones) contribute to a 20-17 loss to Cam and the Panthers.

Giants suffer their worst home lost since LBJ was president. I hope McAdoo and Reese are gone after the season's over.

The Lions did something they hadn't in 26 years: beat the Packers at Lambeau. It certainly didn't help Green Bay's cause that Aaron Rodgers is out for the season.

If Green Bay is still in the playoff hunt late, we could see Rodgers return as early as Week 15. Currently, they're a game behind the Cowboys and Seahawks (two teams they've defeated head-to-head). But these first two games with Hundley haven't exactly been inspiring.

Dallas is at Atlanta this week (Fox late game) and are getting 3. Tomorrow we will know if Ezekiel Elliot will play. If Atlantaís rush defense is as porous as it was against Carolina, look for a Dallas rout.

Nonetheless, while Elliott is innocent until proven guilty as any other American, from a certain point of view you could argue that every time he takes the field when he would be slated for suspension as laid out, he and the team by extension are, in spirit if not exactly the letter of the law, cheating.  Of course, that's only one, quite negative, way to see it, but I believe it a valid one.  That Jones is apparently now going full nuclear and hiring lawyers (apparently the same one risking his reputation trying to represent Harvey Weinstein) to try and block Goodell's possible extension gives him no public relations points by making his cause seem very much personal and vindictive.

The hearing ended after 30 minutes with no decision and no timetable for the decision.

Change over the last hour or so: Elliott's suspension has been upheld. Expect an appeal in 3...2...1... (It will be expedited, but it won't happen until after Sunday's game against Atlanta.)

In Atlanta's 27-7 win against the Cowboys, Dallas QB Dak Prescott got sacked eight times, five of them from Atlanta DE Adrian Clayborne. That eight sacks was the most given up by the Dallas offense since September 15, 1991 against Philadelphia (11 sacks).

He sacked him 6 times, a team-record.

Meanwhile the 49ers get their first win of the season against the undisciplined and under-achieving Giants, leaving the Browns as the last winless team for the 2nd straight year.
