Match Game/Hollywood Squares hour question
« on: September 12, 2017, 05:31:41 PM »
I was reading about this show recently and saw that the top prize for the Match Game Super Match was $30,000. Just wondering if this ever occurred in its short history.

At least once as I recall did the 30 card get revealed, making the Head to Head Match worth the $30K (each celebrity held a card with 5, 10, 20 or 30 on it--that number was multiplied to the Super Match winnings and the top answer won $1000). Don't  recall if it was won. Not sure about other times as our NBC affiliate (WXIA) blacked it out starting in late February 1984.

Actually, there was only a 10, 20, and 30 (4 each of 10 and 20, 1 of 30).

Definitely recall it happening once. Don't recall all of the details, but I do remember the contestant won with Leonard Frey from the horrific NBC sitcom Mr. Smith and he was sitting in the bottom right corner square.
"Audience, if you're scared buy a dog!"

There used to be a video on YouTube of both a 30K win and a loss.
Glad they aren't my council-people.

Ah, much obliged for the correction. It's been a while since seeing the show.

There's no YouTube evidence that I know of, but from this fan's memory, I recall at least one contestant who found "30" two days in a row ... and won the $30,000 top prize both times. She was defeated on her third day as champion and ended with nearly $64,000. If I'm correct, that would have been a record for the show's (short) history.

I also seem to recall episodes where "30" was found but the contestant played for either $7,500 (i.e., matched the $250 response) or $15,000 (having matched the $500 response). Can't recall if either one of those two contestants won.
