2-digit IUFBs?
« on: January 14, 2018, 11:04:02 PM »
I think I already know the answer, but just wanted to be sure...the IUFB prizes have always been worth at least $100, right? Are there any early episodes where one was worth less?

On the daytime 1972 show? No.

Now  another question: Has there ever been an instance in which the item up for bids has been under $200?

It makes sense that they wouldn't go below three digits. I think a $99 or less IUFB would have sounded really cheap even for 1972. Just hearing the word "hundred" would make me feel optimistic. But that's just me.

Potentially, maybe in 1972.  From what I know though, the current minimum is $500 with the max generally being like $3,000 or something, though I think either this season or last season we had a $3,000+ prize (and I'm not talking about the $17,000+ Honda Fit from 2017's second Dream Car Week)

Potentially, maybe in 1972.

I haven't looked at the 1972 recaps lately, but I feel pretty safe saying all the IUFBs were at least $100.

The cheapest IUFBs I can find (through the first 13 weeks, at least) are the Honda QA50 off-road mini-bike (valued at $196 on 0021D and $186 on 0082D) and the George F. Cram Company 16-inch antique tone illuminated globe (valued at $195 on 0045D) and a couple of items valued at exactly $200.

AFAIK, there has never been an IUFB worth less than $200 on the current edition of the show. Perhaps Cullen's version did, but definitely not Barker's.

I recall Cullen TPiR videos having two-digit IUFBs, though it made some sense with the same contestants playing for multiple prizes.

(Never mind. Just as I was searching for curiosity, I saw this recap had one item that was just under $11. So Cullen definitely had smaller IUFBs.)

I'm not prepared to go and look them up, because I have things to do this afternoon and I don't know the exact dates, but I know I have seen IUFBs lower than $200 on the qwizx.com recaps. It was infrequent, but it happened.
Consider than with inflation, $200 is in the ballpark of $1,000-$1,200 in present-day money, and that items worth under $200 popped up in Most Expensive.

The only other sub-$200 IUFB that I know was a $199 recliner offered on August 28th, 1975. Given how much later this item appeared than the others that we know of, it's quite likely that there are others out there that we don't know about.

This recap, from April 1963, had a 67-cent light blub as an IUFB. There was a huge bonus tied to it for the winner.

One Cullen episode had a vaguely described piece of jewelry that turned out to be a fake and only worth around $10. Of course, there was a bonus attached to it, though everyone overbid.
