I don't think that one bad playing of Magic # justifies retirement. There have been worse playings and there have been good ones as well. Just like contestants who blow the first number in Golden Road when it's an easy one or contestants who think a Pontiac is almost $40K, it's just a combination of an inept contestant playing a pricing game.

The contestant would definitely be inept over that price, as there hasn't been a Pontiac built in 8 years  :P

Bad playings do not justify a game's retirement. If the rules are confusing, then sure, but Magic # is just about deciding on a single amount between two values, simple as that. Inflation rates are just a difficult concept to grasp (and even then, inflation should not affect its difficulty).

Magic # would be one of if not the easiest and most won game on the show if contestants were just willing to go higher with the number. The more expensive prize and the gap between prices has been so much in the last few seasons that if a contestant went up past $2,000 with the number a win is virtually guaranteed.

That seems to be the problem.  The contestant hears the rules but somehow thinks the object of the game is to be just a few dollars over the least expensive prize to win.  In this playing, he probably thought the luggage was $800-900 and went a little higher.   This will never happen but if Drew were to unofficially ask the contestant for their estimated price of each prize there would be more winners.  Contestants aren't thinking it through.  Another thought is to change the staging of the game.  Put the more expensive prize on a higher platform, etc.
