Barker will no longer make appearances
« on: June 06, 2018, 07:13:15 PM »
Don't think this comes as a major surprise given his advanced age now, but this from Randy West today on Facebook (emphasis mine):

Quote
Have your pet spayed or neutered...

On this date in 2007, Bob Barker taped his final episode as host of CBS' "The Price Is Right," ending his 35 years on the show.

His finale aired nine days later, and the episode was repeated the following night in primetime as the lead-in to the Daytime Emmy Awards. It capped a career that spanned 50 years as a daily fixture on television.

Bob was brilliant facilitating a genre of broadcasting that had once been a staple among dozens of radio and television programs - pure audience participation - making interesting and entertaining content from unrehearsed interaction with random civilians. It's an art, and Bob made it look easy.

Bob continues to enjoy good health at age 94, living alone - without pets - in the historic Outpost Estates home he shared with his wife for many decades.

Bob's last appearance on "Price" was on April 1st 2015 during which he hosted an especially entertaining game of Lucky Seven. While his performance was all he and fans could have hoped for, Bob remarked that he was surprised the abbreviated participation took more energy than he had expected. He then decided he would not make any subsequent appearances on the show.

Few television hosts ever amassed the following of loyal friends and true that Bob enjoyed, and he leaves an on-air legacy of excellence. Working with him was the highlight of my career, and Bob could not have been kinder, warmer or more supportive.

Thanks for the half century of fun!

Little surprised he doesn't keep any animals at his estate.

I mean, is anyone really surprised?

He deserves to rest. He has done his share for the show many times over.

I agree. He had a long and successful career.

If he didn't retired and stayed on, I would only see him going for a few more years before not having enough energy to do the show.

Not sure what else this means ... except he is no longer making personal appearances.

Agree with everyone and what they've said so far. There has to be a point sometimes where you draw the line and say, "Enough."

Will the show, when Bob reaches 95 (if and when he gets there), acknowledge that 95th birthday on air, or will it be just another day?

Only time will tell one way or another.  Would be nice if he could tape a message that they could air at some point during the hour.

Considering that his 95th is only 6 months away (his DOB is 12-12-1923), I don't doubt he'll get there. As for whether they mention it, no clue there.

The simple fact that Bob is doing as well as he is at almost 95 is nothing short of remarkable.  That being said, I can totally understand why he would no longer want to appear in person on the show.  With age, one tends become increasingly less spry and during his appearance back in 2015, he just didn't have the pep he once did.  He still pulled it off quite well all things considered, but as he himself said, it was a bit much for him.  Of course, one never knows what opportunities he may decide to jump at in the future, but I fully understand if he sticks to his word and stays out of the studio.  That's not to say he couldn't easily make a prerecorded messaged for his 95th birthday if the show wants to acknowledge it, but that all depends on what the powers that be and Bob himself decide.

The actual retail price is...

I don’t doubt Bob’s most recent appearance may in fact end up being his last, but I have a hard time believing he would outright not appear if offered a reasonable incentive to do so.
Pardon my language, but I do believe we all need to calm the f*** down.

It wouldn't shock me if he was unhappy with his physical appearance and has chosen to step back to protect his image.

I would hope that A - He would be well enough physically and mentally to send a taped message to start season 50, should both Bob and "Price" still be around when that event takes place in September 2021 and again a taped message in Dec. 2023 when Mr. Barker would become a centenarian.

Well Betty White, Barbara Walters, Regis Philbin isn't really active these days.

So its not really shocking that Bob doesn't want to make appearances on Tpir.

Betty has definitely cut back, but considering how much she had appeared in recent years, who could blame her? I know she has limited mobility these days.

Barbara is hardly that old herself. She had a nice career, although I suppose appearing on The View can be hard on someone mentally.

Bob still seems quite sharp based on the video of him in Perfect Bid. His face appeared quite red though. I wouldn't doubt he has limited mobility as well. Perhaps the TPIR train could bring him out, or he could be escorted by a model. Bob may also be aware that despite only hosting one game, then appearing at the end, the audience was more than elated to see him come out the big doors... the applause grew MUCH louder when they realized it was him and not Drew. He might be concerned about stealing the show from Drew again.

When Monty came back to Deal in 2010, it was amazing to see how sharp he still was, and it was very entertaining to see him for a full week... a few years later, he came back again, this time with Carol Merrill, and while he was still sharp, you could sense he was a bit winded. That was his last appearance on LMAD, and he only appeared again on Game Changers, looking quite frail and his voice was weaker too.

I’m willing to wager quite a bit that this is the very last thing Bob would be concerned about.
