Game shows that deserve a revival
« on: July 30, 2018, 05:41:45 PM »
With the recent remakes of shows like Match Game, $100,000 Pyramid, and To Tell The Truth, what game shows do you think need a revival?

My suggestions would be Card Sharks. It provides good play-along value and it's family-friendly (or at least was). But keep the 1978 version, please? None of this 2001 garbage.

Also Blockbusters, although you'll never find a better host than Bill Cullen.

Live for the present.  Embrace the future.  Our favorite game show is still producing excellent, high quality, exciting, hour-long* shows every weekday throughout its traditional season window.  It’s as good as it’s been in a long, long time.  If the 1980s were the ‘good ole days’ for the Barker era, so is RIGHT NOW for the Carey era.  Don’t worry about what the future holds.  It will play out in due time.  Enjoy what we have right in front of us in the meantime!

And with the push rule in-- none of this going all-in on deuces and aces and getting burned!

I'd like to see Password Plus return, with retro set and music. I preferred that version over Super Password. I also liked to play along, so no whispered passwords. :)

I would like to see Hollywood Squares get a revival. Go back to the John Davidson era and try to give a car as the bonus prize.

Only if Tom Bergeron  hosted. Also, i'd go back to the bonus round format used in the first few seasons.

The time feels about right to me for a new Tic-Tac-Dough.  Keep it as similar to Wink's syndicated version as possible, adjusted for inflation (although I would keep the 1990 revival's giving the contestants control over stopping the category shuffling and perhaps go with its bonus round of finding a tic-tac-toe, although make sure both X and O make one on the board so no one's short-changed), and it should at least be decent.

High Rollers could also be due for another run, and again, not really much would need to be changed other than upping the payouts ($25,000 for clearing all the Big Numbers, perhaps)

And certainly many obscure shows could be given a second life:  with minor adjustments, Catchphrase, Wordplay, Whew!, and Bumper Stumpers seem like decent options, while Caesar's Challenge, Top Card, and Trump Card could work even if divorced from their original settings (perhaps set the former in a Roman coliseum-like setting, the latter two in casino-like ones)

Much agreed...especially since I would probably audition in a heartbeat to get on such a simple game show.
(to the tune of Sailor Moon)
Guessing prices by moonlight, winning cars by day light, never losing to a real fight, I am the one named...WHAAAAT?!?!

As far as Hollywood Squares, a daytime version would be a best two-out-of-three match with games straddling between episodes. A primetime version would feature  each match played to time and the bonus round serving as the final segment. With a hour long version, you could get in more than one match in daytime.

Waiting for Sale of the Century, obviously modeled after Jim Perry's excellent Sale of the Century from the 80s.  Hopefully I'll get one and Temptation from 2008 didn't destroy chances of a new SOTC.

You know there's one thing I often wondered about that.......what if a contestant in the front game thought a repeat card was due to come up? I know they could freeze if they had control up to the last question of a round, but could they have hypothetically guessed it was to be the same if they wanted? I've always thought it was a major flaw that you could get burned by those there, even losing games outright for it. At the very least if they HAD to pick higher or lower only, I think they shoulda had a rule where if one repeated it was changed automatically. I'd have liked to have seen similar for the money cards as well really, although I suspect the budget factored into why it was merely a push/a bust depending on the time period and era.

I should point out, the Perry series didn't change the doubles rule from "loss" to "push" until after one episode where a contestant got all four 3's in the deck in succession.

Three words: Press Your Luck (and none of that GSN Whammy garbage).

I would keep the 2001 set of Card Sharks but (obviously) use the original format.

If there’s one show that’s ripe for a revival after 15 years off the air, it’s clearly Press Your Luck. You can combine the updated set (look up “Press Your Luck 2013” on YouTube and look at the first video that comes up, although I wish the contestant island resembled the original Press Your Luck) with the elements of the original Press Your Luck (better 2D-animated Whammies, classic squares like Add-A-One, the board is actually arranged in a rectangle) with the elements of Whammy! (Big Bank, and the two halves of a car key, which was ripped off on Wheel of Fortune 8 years later). We can give the Board values a much-given boost (think $6,000/$8,000/$10,000 + spin for Square 4).If this is executed correctly, then we’ve got the next hit reboot on our hands.
