When the nighttime edition of The Price is Right first debuted on NBC 61 years ago on this date at 7:30 PM Eastern, your standard issue TV critic saw it as the end of civilization as we know it, consumerism of the worst kind. Viewers weren’t fazed; when it moved to Wednesday at 8:30 PM a year later, it became prime time’s top game show. In other words, Price was “critic-proof.”
