Rafferty Card Sharks is back on Buzzr
« on: October 26, 2018, 11:45:16 AM »
The 1986-1987 syndicated season of Card Sharks, hosted by Bill Rafferty, returned to Buzzr on Monday, October 22nd. It's on Monday-Friday at 4:30 pm EST. (Replacing the 1986-1989 CBS Bob Eubanks episodes of Card Sharks.) I also noticed that GSN dropped Eubanks CS from the Monday-Friday schedule (9:00 am - 10:00 am EST), so I guess it's MIA for now.

As far as Rafferty CS goes, they started with the September 8, 1986 premiere. From what I've read, the addition of the prize cards and the car game happens at the beginning of week #4 on September 29, 1986. (IIRC, the car game was added to the CBS Eubanks CS about a month later, in late October 1986.) I also understand that the last time Buzzr aired Rafferty CS, they only aired the first five weeks of shows (25 episodes) and then dropped it. Hopefully, it will last longer this time.

In terms of actual episode numbers, the prize cards and car game came on episode #036. In its original run, stations skipped from #015 (end of the third week) to #036 at the end of September 1986, and saved shows #016 to #035 (weeks 4 through 7) for after the finale, to air in June 1987.

Why did they do that? More eyeballs on the former?

How did Buzzr air them the last time around?

Presumably the same way they're doing now, in straight production order (which is how GSN always did them as well, to my knowledge).

Thanks for the answers. I didn't have Buzzr until February 2018 and all I had heard was that the last time Buzzr aired Rafferty CS (in Fall 2017) they only aired five weeks of episodes before dropping it. If they show them in production order, we should begin seeing the prize cards and car game (and educated guess questions?) on Monday, December 10th rather than Monday, November 12th.

This may be slightly off-topic, but does anyone know if Buzzr has all the Perry CS episodes? I remember seeing the emcees week and much of 1978-79 but I'm not sure about the rest.

Live for the present.  Embrace the future.  Our favorite game show is still producing excellent, high quality, exciting, hour-long* shows every weekday throughout its traditional season window.  It’s as good as it’s been in a long, long time.  If the 1980s were the ‘good ole days’ for the Barker era, so is RIGHT NOW for the Carey era.  Don’t worry about what the future holds.  It will play out in due time.  Enjoy what we have right in front of us in the meantime!

In a sense, they have the entire series... but all they've shown, to my knowledge, is April to October 1978, the July 4, 1980 show, and the emcees episodes from September 1980 (and in one of their promos, shots I know to be from the October 1981 finale).

...and after five weeks, it seems as if Buzzr is pulling Rafferty Card Sharks from the schedule again. The schedule for Monday, 11/26 lists "Card Sharks 86" in the 4:30 pm EST slot instead of "Card Sharks 86SYN".  :headbang: I love Buzzr, but why do they only show handfuls of episodes of a certain series before removing them or starting over? Do they only have the rights to the first 25 episodes of Rafferty CS? Also, I've noticed that Combs Feud is now regulated to the early morning hours only, airing Tuesday-Saturday mornings from 4:00 am - 5:00 am EST. And they've started over in 1988 again! The July 4-8, 1988 premiere week with the Holtrust family just wrapped up a few days ago. Why do they only show 1988 and a few 1989 episodes of Combs Feud and then start over again and again?

They do that because it takes time and money to convert additional episodes into whatever format the network uses. They "have the rights" to the entire franchises, but only have so many episodes converted as of now. Every few months they add new episodes to the rotation.
