With this marking 45 years since Tattletales premiered on CBS, I posit the question—would it have succeeded under its working name Celebrity Match Mates and with Gene Rayburn hosting (as he did in development)?

We were among numerous markets where Tattletales didn’t clear at the time. Once CBS axed Secret Storm for it, the affiliates presumed that there wouldn’t be as much outrage over bumping a game show than over a soap.

Don't know if it would have succeeded under that working title.

I'm not sure how the prime CBS affiliate, WCBS-TV in New York City, became unfriendly to the 4:00 p.m. timeslot by the end of the 70's and the beginning of the 80's. They showed Tattletales at 4:00 p.m., as well as Match Game, when it moved there in December 1977. In May 1979, Love of Life was at Noon, The Young and the Restless was at 1:00 p.m., and at 4:00 p.m. was Match Game (presumably reruns of the '79 season, just before the Daily Syndicated run started).

Tattletales is a better title. Rayburn would have done a great job hosting.

When Tattletales first started, WCBS aired it at 1 PM. The show itself even mentioned it around the time it moved to 11 AM on 6/16/75.

Between the end of The Secret Storm on February 8, and the beginning of Tattletales on February 18, a special week called CBS Daytime '90 aired February 11-15. Here's brief audio of it (The Price Is Right and Match Game '74 were preempted).

Yep, I recall that. Our CBS station (then WAGA) ran Secret Storm at 1 PM on a one-day delay; when CBS ran their Daytime 90, WAGA slotted What’s My Line? at 1 and pretty much kept it there until its cancellation in ‘75.
