Press Your Luck Returns!
« on: February 21, 2019, 04:16:55 PM »
This is quite the surprise.  One of the most-loved classic game shows, complete with Big Bucks and Whammies, is back!  Casting details are here.  According to Buzzerblog, the word on the street is this is going to be taped for ABC, which will be a nice addition add to their "Fun & Games" lineup.

Overall, I can't wait for the show to return.  I feel it is the one classic game show that will adapt well to the modern age.

Kudos to ABC for renewing all these shows! Especially since they were the first network to drop out of the genre entirely in 1987.

Personally, I thought we were long overdue for a new PYL. Let's hope this one fares better than the 2002 Whammy! revival did.

Live for the present.  Embrace the future.  Our favorite game show is still producing excellent, high quality, exciting, hour-long* shows every weekday throughout its traditional season window.  It’s as good as it’s been in a long, long time.  If the 1980s were the ‘good ole days’ for the Barker era, so is RIGHT NOW for the Carey era.  Don’t worry about what the future holds.  It will play out in due time.  Enjoy what we have right in front of us in the meantime!

Actually the dropped out of the game show genre in 1991 after they canceled the Ross Shafer Match Game.

And said Match Game was the only game they did post-'87.

...we could go on and on about the ABC game shows between 1991 and now, couldn't we? :P

Press Your Luck definitely deserved another chance. And maybe the Whammy will be something internet worthy.

Press Your Luck deserved a Second Chance.  :oldlol:

And especially by being on ABC instead of GSN like Whammy! was, the new PYL will get a lot more exposure.

Any chance ABC will slot this after Pyramid, like CBS did back in the 80s?

In any case, it'll be great to see PYL back!

Given USA also had it running after Pyramid for a few years, it would seem only right to do so.  This is indeed good news, and hopefully this version works well.

Press Your Luck has remained relevant in today's culture despite production ending in the 1980s.

There are Press Your Luck slot machines all over the country using the original game's look (Todd Newton is the announcer on the slot machine).  There are poker promotions at one of Las Vegas' largest poker rooms (The Orleans) that use the Whammy.  There is an in-game promotion at Columbus Blue Jackets games that has contestants play the Press Your Luck big board complete with "Whambonis" (Whammys riding Zambonis).

It really surprises me that it has taken this long for a reboot to surface!

What will the prizes on the big board be?  $5,000 in 1986 is equivalent to about $11,500 in 2018.  Would the top on the board be "$10,000 + spin"?  Or since it is a primetime series, would it be "$20,000 + spin"?

I wouldn't be surprised if the ($5000 + spin) is still the top prize simply to stay true to the original format. Whammy! had a $5000 top space on the board as well.

The only thing I'm concerned about are the Super Whammies making the game run through too quickly.

I'm going to guess the top dollar amount on the board will be $10,000 + spin if not more. That was the top prize when PYL was on the Gameshow Marathon CBS did in 2006.
