Forgive me if this has been addressed before, but just was looking at shows in that period (before and after) and it got me wondering. It's quite striking the differences between the two in look I must say. The flat look is much more uniform/clean than its' cushioned predecessor. Was there a feeling it'd look better flat? Or was it something else that was the reason?

If I'm not mistaken the change was as simple as the padded walls were starting to sag and rather than go through the trouble of redoing all the padding they just went to painted wood.

I suppose that might explain the disparity in appearance from padded to flat, could see that.

With the major 1992 turntable change, I almost never remember that the padded parts where part of it for over 16 years while the green was replaced with yellow and more red.  While I missed the padded walls, when they changed it I actually loved it.  The look was sharp and more professional.  Imagine if that had been done with green carpet & borders!

Never thought too much into it.  Just thought it was one of those minor or major changes that took place but wasn't a big deal since it didn't affect the format or the games themselves

Iíll just be honest, I never even noticed the difference until only a few years ago, and I was old enough to have probably recognized the change when it took place (although I was watching the show over-the-air, so the signal might have been a little too grainy for minor details like that pop out). That was a neat little Easter egg to find! :P

Better than me, I never noticed until I watched the epidode and saw the title of the video.

I always wondered what does it look like behind the turntable? Not just the rotating side but the whole thing?
Any pictures?

Was the turntable walls originally flat before they went to the padded walls in 1983? When the padded walls did debuted in 1983 the colors looked bold then the colors started fading. The flat walls in 1999 looked much better. I wonder if any of that padding is still around the studio or if anyone on staff kept any pieces of it.

The turntable originally had stucco (or something very similar) on it.  Here's an example from spring of 1975.

While I don't think we'll ever know for 100% certain if anybody saved a piece of the padding, I'd be willing to wager they just threw it in the trash after they replaced it.

What material was used on the turntable walls for the 2003-2007 color scheme?

Most likely a support structure made of 1x4's back then. The newer version is likely made of steel to support the monitor wall.

The original post-cushion design was simple pained wood, and by all appearances the 2003 version was the same material, just repainted.

There are a handful of pictures hosted on the site that show the turntable set from the back:

The standard wood and steel construction; nothing special.
