Yeah, so I don't comment much any more for various reasons.    But, to vent:

"None of those things are real."

#1.  If they hadn't spoiled it for the WHOLE SHOW, would this quote still have happened?  I mean, that was one of the better AFD showcases.   The "products" were close enough to reality to make most people at least pause for a moment, except that announcing that it's AFD and proclaiming that the show isn't going to play any tricks followed by (an attempt at) exactly that is both obvious and disingenuous.

#2.  Dude, sense of humor?   This is the perfect moment to crack a joke.   Any joke would do, from Dr. Evil's "One Meeellion Dollars" to "Can I bid a negative number?."

#3.  Drew, perfect time to INSIST upon a bid.   Find a way to draw a humorous reaction out of the contestant who apparently doesn't have any humor of his own.

#4.  On a show where you're going to try to fool someone with a booby showcase, a "savvy millenial" type is not a good contestant choice.  Not that those selecting contestants could have possibly known he would answer like this, but one would think that you generally want to go for the people that appear most gullible, and surely some sort of clues to that might be visible during the screening process.

Further thoughts:

- The whole "wrong names" bit was completely unfunny and felt forced.    There are humorous ways to do something like that and make it feel more natural, but it felt like they were all had just decided to call each other the wrong names off the cuff, and half of the cast looked annoyed with it most of the time.

- The "tapping the other shoulder" bit didn't land at all for the contestant, and looked awkward on camera.

- The "shoes untied" bit was infantile.

Summarily, in my humble opinion, this show failed to deliver.   I don't get to watch every show, and I was left wishing I had chosen to watch another.   There are a number of gags for AFD which have worked well in the past.   I've enjoyed most of the AFD shows to this point, in fact.    They've had some great ideas.   THIS one could have been great if they'd just done the showcase without all of the unfunny and obvious lead-in work.

My suggestion, not that it would be heard or heeded:  if you're going to do a fake showcase, let it be just that.   If you're going to do a gag show, pull out all the stops.

We'll see in a year, I suppose.

Let's all take a deep breath.
Wise words.

The primary issue that I saw with this fake Showcase was that unlike prior examples (including 1975, 1976, 1983, 1987, 1999, and 2008), this time it was presented first.

"None of those things are real."
In contrast, I found it amusing that, rather than a bemused reaction or one making a joke in return, he shut it down immediately...but yes, agreed on all of your other points.
The above is my opinion and mine alone.

#2.  Dude, sense of humor?   This is the perfect moment to crack a joke.   Any joke would do, from Dr. Evil's "One Meeellion Dollars" to "Can I bid a negative number?."

I don't think it's reasonable to expect the contestant to come up with an impromptu joke. If anything, the show needs fewer contestants whose priority is putting on a performance for the cameras. Steven's focus was on trying to win (see his concentration during the real second showcase), and coming from that mindset, his response was appropriate.

#3.  Drew, perfect time to INSIST upon a bid.   Find a way to draw a humorous reaction out of the contestant who apparently doesn't have any humor of his own.

I disagree. Once the bubble was burst, there was nowhere for the gag to go. Say Drew had insisted on and gotten a bid. What then? "No, yeah, you were right, that was a fake showcase." The moment had already passed.

I agree that calling attention to it being April 1 at the top of the show torpedoed the chance of the fake showcase fooling anybody. Although I also think the second and third prizes just barely crossed the line into "most people will know these aren't real" territory.

The nonstop trip around the world was the prize that made me laugh out loud, and if they had tried a little harder to sell it on being a good idea ("see the majesty of the seven wonders of the world from the luxury of your cabin"), that could have fooled people. The food pod microwave was the prize that tipped the joke. Also, with all of the cutting and editing that happens in each episode, the effort that went into the magic trick of the pods turning into real food was lost.

Then again, the show once got a bid out of a contestant for a trip to Boguslovania, so maybe I'm wrong.

I was at this taping. The best part was watching Rachel choke down the bite of the hamburger. $2500 for air fare, hotel and other expenses to be seen on TV for a total of about 45 seconds total.

While it certainly would be appropriate to crack a joke, I can easily agree that pressure does odd things to people, and he was in a very odd situation to boot.  Still, the response the guy gave was about as killjoy as you can get, both in substance and tone.   There were plenty of ways to go with that, and he picked the worst one.

In my mind, I hear, “Not Real? What do you mean Not Real? Roger, we’ve been had!   Who were the sponsors of those prizes!?  Call the FBI! call the police! Call the....  no, you’re right, of course, they’re not real!  April Fool!”

So yeah, there’s always somewhere to to go with it.

You know, had I been the one making decisions, I think I would have stopped tape, kindly thanked the contestants for playing along, apologized to EVERYONE in house that the joke didn’t work, and just started the showcase segment over.   Or, let the show finish and filmed a pickup going straight into the first showcase.  At least at that point the running gag could have been “we really didn’t do anything today. HA!”

Let's all take a deep breath.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but I found the fake showcase downright hilarious. Stopping tape and doing that is totally disingenuous.

I thought the contestant's response was a fair answer.
