Drew really seemed to be trying his best to save Isaac's bacon on that horrible Showcase bid. He did everything but ask "Is that your final answer?" I would really love to know WTH Isaac was thinking with that bid.

Maybe he was looking for even more attention?

When was the last time we had a bid that low on a showcase (besides $1 or such for an “obvious” overbid)?

Based on his “0 2 0” comment, Drew and I both wouldn’t have won the car in Line ‘Em Up. :)

Only thing I can think of he really did believe the trips collectively were around the $5,000 mark. Then again, we do see fate smile on clear undervids. The best example was in Maxene Fabe’s book from 40 years ago, where a young woman, going in as the top winner, bid more than $10,000 less than her showcase, but then the runner up overbid in his showcase. (FWIW, here was a “Flackery Flick” parody on “Rocky II” (the book said just “Rocky,” but I’m guessing “II” since there was an earlier “Rocky” parody that had different prizes than the one Fabe described here)).

Kind of like the obvious overbid we sometimes see ... although I have thought some of the time that was by contestants who — going in as runner up — clearly did not want the showcase they were bidding on.

Drew REALLY needs to be careful with this though. A lot of contestants have been having trouble with the whole "multiples of ten" thing lately, especially in contestants' row, and Drew has been helping them to correct their bids where he would have remained silent before. However, this was the first time I've seen it happen in the showcase where the contestant would have definitely been over if they had taken Drew's suggestion. A $4,600 bid on the first showcase at least has some chance of winning, because you don't know what the other contestant is going to bid yet. A $46,000 bid yet, on the other hand, does not, because over is over, and Drew should be able to figure out pretty easily that $46k would be over on that showcase. Thus, if the contestant had bid $46,000, they would have been able to successfully argue that Drew caused them to potentially lose, and they should be awarded the showcase.

Then again, I've seen underbids backfire. I think this is in the timeline, but there's an episode I've seen (April 20, 1982, 4492D) where on the first Showcase, the runner-up bid $10,200 (for bedroom furniture and a dune buggy), and the audience clearly groans and disapproves. In response, on her own showcase, the top winner bids $1. Come results time, and not only has the runner-up not overbid, but she's nailed a DSW with a $9 difference!

That dumb $4,600 bid has to make you wonder is Isaac was high on something. Sure, this was a FRATS, but I'd have bid $21,000 and called it a day.
