Why does it seem like there are so many folks in contestant's row who mistakenly think that they have the winning bid, like on today's show?  I've been noticing this for quite a while now. I can't identify anything that Drew is doing differently than Bob did, so it must be something else. Any ideas?

I can't speak for anyone that visited the studio with Bob present, but it's so loud in there. You can barely make out what Drew is saying sometimes, so I think people just mishear or get overly excited.
Torgo has left the building. John and I never really cared for the way he presented himself.

And even if you can hear the bids (good luck), there's no tote board on the contestants' side of contestants' row to remind you of what the bids were unless you look at the TVs hanging from the ceiling. Between nerves and noise, it's easy to simply forget someone bid $100 more than you and think you won when you didn't.

As soon as I saw the theme in Cover Up, I knew that it had to be the second preempted episode from earlier in the season, thanks in large to the coverage of Bush 41's death.

I’ve noticed this trend as well and I think I’ve figured it out. When Drew sees the ARP, if he notices that a contestant has just overbid on a price, he looks directly at that player as his voice inflected differently than usual. Then he looks to find who actually won the prize. By this point, the contestant who Drew looked at first thinks that they won because it’s so loud and Drew is looking directly at them so they begin to come up on stage.

Bob would not usually point out when a contestant barely overbid on a prize. He would read the price and identify the winner not paying much attention to the three losing bids. In Bob’s later years he seemed to pay even less attention to anyone who overbid, even by $1. And if he did acknowledge it, it would be after he looked at the winner and confirmed they would be coming up on stage.
