Supermarket Sweep to return?
« on: August 27, 2019, 10:14:46 PM »
In an update to an article about Leslie Jones leaving Saturday Night Live, TVGuide.com posted this little tidbit:

Quote
Update 6:10 p.m. PT: One of Leslie Jones' first post-Saturday Night Live gigs is apparently hosting a reboot of the old-school game show Supermarket Sweep. Deadline reports that among the many projects she's now working on is an updated version of the grocery store shopping show, where contestants race around a supermarket filling their carts with the highest dollar value in groceries they can grab within a time limit. Jones is said to have championed the reboot, produced by the Fremantle company that produces American Idol, among its many other properties.

I may be a fan of Leslie from Saturday Night Live and her appearances on the ABC game shows, but seeing her as a game show host is questionable. But still, according to the same Deadline article, she was a fan of the series growing up. And we just have to wait and see what comes out of this potential revival.

Five months too late for an April Fools joke. Not a fan of Leslie.

She might not even be the host, as Leslie Jones has a lot on her plate now that she left SNL.

He was, but he's now 70 years old. It's quite possible he didn't want to host this iteration of Supermarket Sweep.

Honestly, and so what? Other people can be good hosts. Just because someone did it before does not mean that is the only viable choice.

Still, it will be interesting to see how this version plays out. The '90s version was ahead of its time with their self-checkout counters that have become a staple, and one thing I'd like to see in the market are special guests who can assist in certain items, like a butcher, baker, and a florist who can do the work for the runners who can stop there and eventually return to pick up their bonus there.

As far as grocery items, a lot of pharmaceutical products have really gone up in price since the last series ended, so I'd imagine that will be a busy section of the market. Because it would be easy now to rack up over $2,000 for the Big Sweep now, make the Bonus Sweep prize $10,000.  An alternative is to make the grand prize free groceries for a year. Let's hope this gets greenlit and maybe pull a Double Dare 2018 where David becomes the announcer.

Now that I think about it, David proved to be a good announcer on The Price is Right Live.

If Sweep does return, it won't be in the same way. The television landscape has changed. I'm afraid that there will be too much fluff, instead of focusing directly on the game. (Think of what DOND did with the contestant's family in the audience - all that fakery really wasn't necessary, but I digress.) Also, if it ends up being in primetime, (which it will be; nobody puts game shows in daytime anymore) it'll get sucked into the ideology of a dark set, grim music scores, and high intensity. That's not at all what Sweep originally was meant to be. It was a quaint little game designed to be fun. The Mini-Sweeps, varying tests of knowledge of grocery items, and all the bonuses that came and went during the Big Sweep just made the show work.

Regardless, the real thing might be completely different from my expectations, so I'm willing to sit back and give it a chance.

My big question is can Leslie pull off the sweaters the way David did?

Seriously though, it is certainly intriguing to say the least. I like your idea of David returning as the announcer/co-host like Marc Summers returned to announce/co-host the current version of Double Dare pannoni.

A couple things:

1) David Ruprecht is going to be 71 in October. He's not a young man anymore. In a recent video with the Wink page, it is clear he's not moving as well as he used to and he's a little slower. That's not going to work well on a modern Sweep.

2) It is not the end of the world that someone other than David Ruprecht can host the show. Leslie Jones is definitely not the person I expected to be picked. However, it will likely get ratings thanks to Leslie.

3) My opinion is a little mixed on the combo of Leslie Jones and Supermarket Sweep, but I'm open to seeing how she does. Supermarket Sweep and a good deadpan comic (and I love Leslie Jones' realistic sense of humour) is a strange combo. However, being a comedian is a good way to get a game show host job since at least the late 1980s. Lew Schneider got the Make the Grade job based on his comedian work.

What it was meant to be was fine for its day. But we have no idea what it’s going to look or feel like now. Taken in total, ABC’s game lineup is very faithful to the parent versions in visual look, adapted to the reality that it’s 2019. Card Sharks being a fairly glaring exception, in order to go all in on the casino vibe.

This says nothing of the fact that supermarkets themselves have evolved in the past couple of decades.

But that said, it doesn’t matter what it was meant to be then. It matters if they can adapt it and find a way to work for the audience now. And if that means a visual upgrade, great. It takes nothing away from what came before, it just tweaks it for a new generation, and I fail to see how that’s a bad thing.

First and foremost, great post. This is rational and genuinely a fair way to look at matters from the production company.

I think it does matter a touch of what it was then, to slightly disagree. That said, that is only in the respect that it’s a baseline of what the core format/show basics are, like the Big Sweep. Beyond that, absolutely agree. Anything can and should change to get it to appeal to modern audiences. Your point about supermarkets changing drastically in the past nearly 20 years resonates with something like Clock Game’s set, very much set to fit the times as a potential parallel. As you know, but bears repeating, it’s to their benefit to do this. I’m just looking forward to seeing what they bring.

Amazed CBS isn’t on this. Get with the times guys, keep languishing behind with network prime time shows. I say that as more than just a fan, the time slots are open.

And I am so freaking auditioning.

Leslie Jones yelling at contestants during the mini sweep is all the energy I need. "GET THAT HAM!"
Torgo has left the building. John and I never really cared for the way he presented himself.
