Who would've guessed that Clock Game would be the Big Money game of the day? I most certainly did not.

And thanks to both car games being won, the largest jackpot was recorded today.

Good thing that car wasn't $24,010, or there would be complaints about how she would have won with her original $19,060 price.

Also, when was the last time before today when they didn't play multiple "big money" games on Friday of Big Money Week?

Once again, TPIR's Big Money Week makes Wheel of Fortune's Big Money Week look like a laughingstock. Ironic since WOF was doing Big Money Weeks years before TPIR began doing it.

Question for Scott if you're reading and free to answer: Would it be possible for the producers to change something like the location of the secret X during a taping? (Obviously not during a playing, but before the game starts). That stuck out today, and we thought it might have happened that way because there was so much winning earlier in the show.

Question: do you mean, change the position of when the game is played during the show, or actually change the location of the X on the gameboard (i.e. move it to/from the center position, as it's more likely to be won if it's in the center, given that anyone who wins two Xs, and didn't botch the playing, would always win if it was there)?

Something tells me that Standards & Practices might have a say in that, especially if the position is selected randomly.

^There is evidence that the X's aren't randomly distributed. In Brian's analysis, the middle was the right choice more than half the time, while the bottom was the right choice less than a tenth of the time.

I remember that there was also discussion from a Publisher's Clearing House episode a couple years ago that the Pathfinder setup was extremely generous. Since then, I've always thought it to be a possibility to change the setup of a game as long as it hadn't been wheeled on stage.
"If any show, forget sports, Price is Right, [the audience is] the star of the show. Somebody... coming on down and losing their minds, and ... crying, that's the show. The show isn't me, the show isn't necessarily [a] can of soup, how much that is, it's watching people go bananas, and there's going to be some of that missing."

-Drew Carey, interview with Athletic, September 16, 2020

"I honestly thought the doubler was gone, but 9821 going $0 makes sense"

I did some searching to see whether any higher-ups associated with the show have ever said something that would answer this question. I couldn't find anything, so I'm going to assume that it isn't my place to answer.

The last time someone won Secret X where the "X" was at the bottom , 12/24/10 ( The only time in the Drew Era )
The total amount won by all showcase winners this week was $562,028. I'm assuming that's a record for a week of shows.

I haven't been able to find any source for this, but I think I remember Roger once saying (or, if not that, somebody claiming Roger said) something about the only time they'd change setups mid-show was at the very last shows of the season, when they wanted to try to hit their budget as exactly as possible. It sounded more like he took pride in trying to hit the budget as exactly as possible rather than something out of necessity. Can't remember if he said anything about S&P needing to clear it.

Also, on the 30th Anniversary special, the first two games were Triple Play and Plinko. According to the FAQ, Plinko would have been played with a $20K slot if Triple Play had been lost. So assuming the above is true, there's precedent...

But changing the X over a $6,800 prize package in an already luck-based game where a win isn't guaranteed seems really petty. (Especially after offering an easy $50K bonus in freaking Clock Game, of all things.)
Quote from: Bill Todman
"The sign of a good game, is when you don't have to explain it every day. The key is not simplicity, but apparent simplicity. Password looks like any idiot could have made it up, but we have 14 of our people working on that show. There is a great complexity behind the screen. It requires great work to keep it simple."

It was very obvious on a PCH week show that started 0/4 that a Path setup was made significantly easier. I believe Roger... but he hasn't been in charge in 11 years.

Also, X is not luck. 90+% of contestants cover the middle spot first, then another 80+% of those cover the top with a 2nd X.
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...

It was definitely better they didn't make the last show all cash prizes this year, the lineups when they did that just didn't flow well at all.

The $5,000 card doesn't get picked all that often in Card Game. Lavada certainly made good use of her extra cushion.

Tough Take Two, Richard went for the temptation of using the prize with the -00 ending for the second turn. Tough to guess that the guitar would also end in -00 though.

Very gutsy decision to keep going with $6,000 in hand in Pass the Buck, but boy did it pay off!

Imagine the budget effect if the first Showcase was won rather than the second.

I didn't expect Clock Game to be the Big Money game though...but great job on Claire's part.

I was afraid Lavada lost Card Game, but luckily she still won!  It's rare for somebody to pick the $5K range.

I cringed when Rosseleir risked $6,000 to go for the car.  I was happy it paid off.

Secret X: Okay, if the X was on the Shadoe Stevens square for a car, it wouldn't be surprising.  Today's playing where a $6,800 prize package was up for grabs, the X was on the bottom.  Now that was surprising.

I cringed when Rosseleir risked $6,000 to go for the car.  I was happy it paid off.

It was the right play purely from a expected value standpoint.

There were 4 remaining spaces.  You've got the car, 3k, and two lose everythings.  The car was $17,115.

So you have four possibilities:  -$6,000, -$6,000, +$3,000, and +$17,115.

Add that all up and divide by the total number of options.  Going for it has an expected value of +$2,028.75.

In order for it to be a bad bet to go for it purely off the math, you'd need to have picked the $5,000 and $3,000 first, and the car would have to be worth less than $15,000.

This is also why it's never the right play to bail in Spelling Bee except for very cheap cars, even if you're down to your last card and are counting on one of the two CAR cards.

I almost completely agree with you, except that you need to look at the value of the car from the contestant's perspective. For example, if they plan to sell the car, the value of the car is really whatever they could sell it for, not $17,115. If they plan to turn down the car entirely, then the value of the car is $0. So following your well-explained math, if the value of the car to the contestant was $9,000 or more, it was the correct play to keep going.
