I for one really enjoyed the 50's Diner theme of this year's Halloween special. Different and unique. Using the black/white filter for some of the cutaway shots gave it a neat flair. Not quite as fun as some of the previous Halloween specials, but still a good effort and appreciated.

I was really hoping that the Bellaire would've been won, and even though he lost, I agreed with Courtney's strategy on the gameplay. Ironically, if Courtney had followed the deodorant with the cake mix that would've been a win, or as Drew pointed out, picking 2 chips instead of the 1 would've also been a win.

As a side note, I never would've believed that a classic car like that Bellaire would've been less than $20 grand.

I thoroughly enjoyed today's throwback episode. The way they decorated the set, especially the turntable, was phenomenal.

-Rotten luck on Grocery Game. Two bags of chips would've done it.
-Being as though this is Halloween, 13 was screaming "PICK ME!!!" and I'm sure the producers were counting on that.
-I was half expecting Side to be played, with the redesign and the 50s theme in mind. Too bad it was lost, though.

As a side note, I never would've believed that a classic car like that Bellaire would've been less than $20 grand.

1. Said Bel-Air is a 1956. Popularity (and price) increases by year from 1955-1957, with 1957 models commanding the highest values.
2. Our Bel-Air today was equipped with the ultra-common 235 straight-six engine. V8 equipped models are the most desirable.
3. The car on the show has been restored to stock condition with no further modifications, which keeps the cost down.
4. Coupe models command much higher values than sedans.

So yes, while I too am a little surprised that it was less than $20k, when I take a look at all the facts it doesn't surprise me.

Doesn't this pretty much happen every time there's a "99" pair? They know damn well in any game if a choice has a 99 ending, the contestant will pick it.

I find it ironic that, despite the ugly new Side By Side display, it actually fits with the 50s theme.

That was another great Halloween show, especially with the cast dressed up exactly as they would look in the 50s. I loved seeing Drew dressed up as a chef, and Rachel pulled off her best look with the poodle skirt and saddle shoes that were popular back then.

I guess we all saw that coming with the redesigned Side by Side set; it definitely fit in with that 50s vibe.

The Showcases were actually very disappointing, as they both offered cars that were not made in the 50s: The only VW model available at the time was a Beetle (too bad they don't make those anymore), and IIRC, Hyundai did not exist until 1986. But those aside, it was still a fun show to watch, and I'll definitely watch it again online.

SN: If that '56 Bel Air is worth $19,995 now, it would've been $2,118 when it was new.

The nod to the Cullen era Price is Right was a nice touch (which I don't believe ever really happened during Bob's reign other than the opening of episode 1 when he said "Let me assure fans of the old Price is Right this is is your favorite game based on the pricing of merchandise...")

The music cues during prize descriptions were spot-on 1950's jingles.  Also a nice touch.  The set looked great and I thought a 1950's theme for a Halloween special was an original and fun idea.

Grocery Game: That was painful.  I was hoping Courtney picked 2 chips...oh well.

Half Off: That third set of SPs fooled me.  I too picked the recipe book instead of the clock as Shelby did.  Had it gone down to two boxes I had a feeling it would have been 5 OR 13.  You were inclined to say 13 since it's an unlucky number.  You were also inclined to pick 5 too.  Tough luck.  I too said 13.

Side By Side: Alma and I both picked 6099.  That was EVIL!!!!   I really miss the SORRY sign if there was a loss in this game.

Agreed. The show *looked* phenomenal. Kudos to the art department. Does anyone know--was the bottom row of the home base monitors removed for the 'diner' wall? or were they merely covered?

Those Bargain Game prizes seemed to be a little too much for daytime: designer clothes over $7k? An iMac for $5k? What an odd combination for today's top win (showcase aside).

It did happen once actually or at least once, in 1986 when a contestant playing Card Game wanted to "freeze", and Bob remarked "That sounds like the Price is Right Bill Cullen used to do when you start that freezing business".

I also really enjoyed this episode. These themed episodes are all about having fun, and it didn't detract from any of the game playing.

I wonder from what year the vintage 1950s TPiR clip came from. Thinking it must be from a very early episode, one of the earliest that's surviving in Fremantle's archives. Given the different font of the nameplates and the set appearing like it might be from a very early episode.

Incidentally, that brings to mind a question: What is the earliest known surviving episode or footage from the Cullen-era TPiR? I once heard the earliest complete episode was a daytime show from the late spring of 1957, but surely there are at least bits and pieces of episodes (i.e., incomplete episodes) that came from the very early months – i.e., end of 1956/winter 1957 – out there.
