Not one, but two of my favorite games today: 10 Chances and Time Is Money.

Hmmm... should I use the word ‘ridiculous’ to describe today’s 10 Chances playing? I thought to myself, for one thing, “Does the exercise bike even look like it costs 2 or 3 hundred dollars??” And after such a good start. (Still would like to see a $51K - $98K auto offered in this game. :-))

Welp, I guess today's theme was "Start out strong, crash at the end."

Example #1: Money Game. Todd nailed the first pair but after that just couldn't catch a break. He might've had a chance if he didn't pick 48.
Example #2: Ten Chances. Oy vey. Crystal nailed the water bottle but, combined with a bunch of lowball guesses and non-zero endings, she couldn't even take a stab at the car. Too bad.

Live for the present.  Embrace the future.  Our favorite game show is still producing excellent, high quality, exciting, hour-long* shows every weekday throughout its traditional season window.  It’s as good as it’s been in a long, long time.  If the 1980s were the ‘good ole days’ for the Barker era, so is RIGHT NOW for the Carey era.  Don’t worry about what the future holds.  It will play out in due time.  Enjoy what we have right in front of us in the meantime!

Finally! I get to see TPiR locally for the first time in a couple weeks! :D

-That Money Game..... my instinct was right about 84.
-Jeez, that Ten Chances was quite agonizing.

All in all, a middling show with some painful losses. Eh, you have good days and bad.

People don't get the strategy for Money Game. If you eliminate all the "back pair" cards that end in 0, 5, 9, or are between 90-99, plus the season number you'll only have about three real choices for the back and the game suddenly becomes so much easier. They almost-exclusively use the random-looking numbers.

Tons of people are going to pick 49 come next season because of its "clean" ending.

Did anyone notice that in Cliff Hangers Joanna was allowed to change her bid on the first item? Luckily for her she got away with it. Had that been Bob Eubanks or Monty Hall (who were/are known for this), they'd probably have told her the producer must accept her first answer ... and she'd have lost.

Anyway, the corrected bid worked out for her.

Would it be a good idea to reveal the rule that each of the 10 chances items ends in a zero? I know it would guarantee the first 2 items as a win but the quicker they guess the right answer, the more chances to go for the car.

That would ruin the game in my opinion.

Not necessarily. The price of the car is still hard to guess correctly.

FTFY. That's not an opinion--it's a fact.

Declaring the zero rule--in effect giving away the first prize, and making the second insanely easy to win--would undercut the tension that the game builds in. Smart shoppers (or LFaTs) can indeed knock out the first few in only a few chances, giving them more opportunities to win the car. But the game's fun lies in seeing them try to reason it out, and my favorite playings are the ones where players go through six or more chances on the first two prizes combined and then only have a few tries to win the car. It makes for much better TV.

Change for the sake of change isn't a good thing. Neither is trying to fix something that isn't broken.

The game has been played since the 1970s. It would change the game’s dynamic. And it’s been said and shown so often: watching the show regularly and/or doing research can be very helpful. I think that with this in mind, there’s no need to explicitly state “the zero rule” on air.

This. Very well put.

Plus remember the spiel from the first show in 1972: "...this is your favorite games, still based on the pricing of merchandise, with wonderful awards for smart shoppers."

Giving away the first digit of a five-digit car for free doesn't undercut tension or make for bad TV. Effectively turning Ten Chances into Nine Chances is the opposite of that.
