I think that’s the closest joint showcase bid we’ve had in quite a while.

-Smart bailout in Temptation. $15K for a Nissan Versa was definitely wrong, but at least Paul got some nice gifts to tote home.
-Pick a Pair was tough, at least for me. Everything looked like it could've went with everything else. Only thing that really stood out was the straws and cat food (and even that wasn't for certain), other than that it was a toss up.
-Bonkers: Y'know, even though she could've played that better, $6492 for Taiwan is pretty evil.
-Pocket Change: Sweet clutch win! Her guesses, especially for the second number, weren't exactly outstanding, but good thing luck was on her side.
-And let's talk about those showcase bids! Boy I haven't seen such wonderful bids from Stagey in a long, long time.

Live for the present.  Embrace the future.  Our favorite game show is still producing excellent, high quality, exciting, hour-long* shows every weekday throughout its traditional season window.  It’s as good as it’s been in a long, long time.  If the 1980s were the ‘good ole days’ for the Barker era, so is RIGHT NOW for the Carey era.  Don’t worry about what the future holds.  It will play out in due time.  Enjoy what we have right in front of us in the meantime!

I got to watch the games with one of my patients today!

Flip Flop was pretty easy. Alaska trips are usually around $5k.

Holy cow, Bonkers was evil. I thought for sure that trip was going to be around $9k. While the going with the odds worked (although 5 could have gone either way) I would not have expected that trip to be $6k.

I would have won Most Expensive. I was thinking the designer accessories, but there wasn't a brand mentioned in the prize description. If it would have been Gucci, Coach, etc., I would have gone for them; but, that fridge was pretty big and had a lot of features to it.

Pocket Change was awesome! That was a great win! The second number wasn't too difficult, but the last three digits were crapshoots. I love watching luck play out well for contestants!

I had to watch the end result of the showcases just to relive how awesome the bidding was in both instances, especially Shannon missing a DSW by ONLY $17!  SEVENTEEN BUCKS!

But I digress.  I had to tip my hat to both of them.  That was fine bidding between Shannon and Ethan.

If only both of them knew that bidding from 000-250 means you can't win both showcases.  :-(

I think the whole "251-999 only" thing is really annoying. They could at least do one or two per season, especially after they had that one guy recently who caught on by ending his bid in 251.

What's "Stagey" ?

Good to see tempty back after a long absence. Great bids on both showcases!

What's "tempty"?

In other words - a fair number of us don't sit in chat and don't know the chat lingo.  Is it too hard to type "temptation"?  (And I really have no idea what "Stagey" is)

Seems to happen fairly often that going with the odds (with 5, as you say, being an either way number) works out - unfortunately it also is hard to get contestants to at least try that one (or in this case, two) option(s) first.

What's "Stagey" ?

I believe that means the player(s) on Stage.

Temptation being played for a car THAT cheap?  Wow.  I just don't get it.  You'd think that Temptation should be getting played for close to 3 Strikes-level cars.  Glad he bailed.

I see some people saying Bonkers was evil...in what world?  7 you go low, 6 you go low, 5 you check low first and go high if you don't have it right, and 3 you go high.  And everything low but the 3 ended up being the right answer.  This is damn near a steadfast rule for this game, isn't it?  0 1 2 3 4 go higher 5 6 7 8 9 go lower?

What a win on Pocket Change.  Not often you see someone get exactly where they need to!

And wow those Showcase bids.

I see some people saying Bonkers was evil...in what world?

The last three numbers were easy (last two go with the odds, 5 try both up and down), but trips to Taiwan (or just about all trips to Asia) are usually expensive.

Trips to Taiwan prices from this season and last season:
$15,324
$12,164
$9,364
$9,124

So when I saw the trip I had a ballpark price of around $9k-$12k. I was surprised to see Bonkers. I was thinking that it would be around $9k, as most Asia trips tend to be pricey. The first number in the prize in Bonkers is really the only one that needs pricing knowledge, as the rest are almost always "go with the odds." Roundtrip coach from LA to Hong Kong (which isn't that far from Taiwan) was $9k when I won Push Over, so I am curious as to how much they calculated for airfare for this trip. The hotel probably wasn't that expensive, but the trip even had a sightseeing tour included with it.

The first number in the prize in Bonkers is really the only one that needs pricing knowledge, as the rest are almost always "go with the odds."

Crazy enough, it seems to be always "go with the odds" ever since Season 47. If you know this trick, you can place the markers once, chat with Drew and show him your baby pictures for 28 seconds, and hit the button as time runs out and win.

Bonkers
Addendum: "Go with the odds" recent trend. After I wrote this Bonkers guide but before I posted it, someone posted on golden-road.net about a new pattern emerging in this game. It's simply this: go with the odds. If the wrong digit is 0-4, go higher. If the wrong digit is 6-9, go lower. If it's 5, then it could be either. For example, if the wrong price is 4753, it should take at most two attempts: HLHH and HLLH. This is a recent trend:
  • Season 47: This was always true for every digit (up to June 16 at least).
  • Season 46: This was always true for every digit except the first. There were times the wrong first digit was 6 or 7 and the actual first digit was 8 or 9. But the pattern held for digits 2-4 in every playing.
  • Season 45: This was false plenty of times.
So this may be a new unwritten rule or it may be a coincidence in the last season or two. I personally would go for the "try every combination" tactic myself, but it's worth continuing to look over the next year or two to see if this continues to be the case.

The pattern's held true for every playing so far in Season 48. It seems to be a deliberate choice the producers are making to get the game won more often.

And yet, contestants have still managed to rack up 15 losses against 12 wins since Season 46.
Quote from: Bill Todman
"The sign of a good game, is when you don't have to explain it every day. The key is not simplicity, but apparent simplicity. Password looks like any idiot could have made it up, but we have 14 of our people working on that show. There is a great complexity behind the screen. It requires great work to keep it simple."

I think it's because very few contestants are actually looking at the numbers.

The game encourages fast action so they are trying to find the right pattern instead of thinking about the odds or price.

Drew explains Bonkers too quickly.  The contestant was unsure of what to do when the clock started.  She pressed the buzzer with only one paddle on the board.  She clearly did not understand what she was supposed to do.  If he went through one number at a time and explained it one number at a time, the win rate would likely go up.
