Eggcrate Display Mystery Solved!
« on: February 28, 2020, 12:22:47 PM »
- After so many years, we now have info on the "eggcrate" display's manufacturer and model number. It is made by Display Systems, and the model number is the 19S-8. See it in action here!

Also, at this time, however, I do not know anything further about the Display Systems company. Anybody have any idea who they were?

First known on-air use: in 1971, on the ABC version of "Password". (The 1969 "Joker's Wild" pilot had a modified version; the 3 and 5 looked slightly different.)
It should be noted that in some EOTGS photos of ABC's Password, a slide display (like the CBS version, but in a different font) was used. These photos were likely from very early episodes, or even a possible pilot.

Early episodes. More photos are in Adam Nedeff's biography of Allen Ludden, and the celebs present in those pics match those listed in the guides that are online.

Still in use on 8 known pricing games:
•Check-Out
•Line 'Em Up
•Magic #
•Pass the Buck
•Race Game
•Spelling Bee
•Switcheroo
•Take Two
Note that "Check-Out" is the only one that didn't use these displays originally.
