I would have done exactly what John did in Punch-A-Bunch. I also had a strong feeling Hannah went one value too far in That’s Too Much!.

Tough loss for Jordan in Cover Up. I’m glad he ended up winning an auto in his showcase. And great bid! :-)

Yeah, Cover Up was a tough loss. He played about as well as you could, but at some point that game boils down to random luck. Now or Then was a rough one today, that one felt like it was setup for a loss. I can buy that exact same box of Milk Duds at numerous stores for around that price or less.

Cover Up basically turned into Switcheroo at the end, and all five digit choices for the tens digit were only one apart.

How is that any less fair than normal?
Torgo has left the building. John and I never really cared for the way he presented himself.

It was a tough loss, but I’m honestly shocked I got 4/5 numbers considering I’m 26 and have not a single clue what a new car goes for. The car I won in the Showcase is actually the first new car I ever owned.

For the Showcase, I literally just spit balled because you are juggling trying to look excited while also doing math and, not knowing the value of anything but the certain cash ($5000), I just guessed the Beverly Hills trip was $5000 too and the car had to be $18000, equaling $28000.

I near crapped my pants when Drew said I won because my opponent was so close too and I was totally thinking it was over. The new car is a pretty sweet ride.

For Cover Up, I literally decided between 7 and 8. Oddly, 8 is my lucky number, but I just thought “Hey, Lucky 7. Why not?” TBH, I didn’t really need a second car. Lol

Now or Then was a bit rough. Vanessa and I were sitting next to each other off to the side since we were already won and done, and I think his supporters, and V & I were all in his line of sight. We were shouting out answers to help but Vanessa & I surprisingly were just as wrong as he was and after a while, we both shrunk in our seats like “Don’t look at us. We suck right now.”

Congrats on your showcase win, Jordan!! People complain about the taxes, but winning a new car that you can use for the next decade if you want to for just the taxes is wonderful, isn't it? And no one can blame you for losing Cover Up on that 10s digit. Indeed, it was quite refreshing seeing someone use good strategy in that game in getting the second number wrong on the first try. Good job!

A lot of people I spoke to think that I used some strategy but I was truly just kind of picking aimlessly and got lucky.

The taxes were not bad AT ALL. Since I won a relatively low amount, I only had to pay 7% income tax for everything, and then when I registered it in NJ (that was truly the worst part considering I got the car on June 11th and DMVs didn’t open until June 26th - not being able to go until July 7th), our sales tax here is less than California. Basically, with the cash I won, I got a new car, paid the taxes and fees AND had enough to pay my insurance for a year. (Plus, I’ll probably get it all back once I sell my old car, which was in pretty good shape and recently had a bit of work done.)

Much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, you're not done paying taxes yet. They don't do a great job explaining this, but you'll get a 1099 from the show early next year. You'll have to report that on your 1040 and state tax returns, so what you won on the show is added to the income you make from other sources and is taxed as if you had made it at a job. To give an example, let's say your total income, excluding TPiR, is $50,000. Given you won $30,727 on the show, your total income is now $80,727. Here's how it will break down by type of tax:

Federal tax: Assuming you're single and take the standard deduction of $12,400, the federal tax burden on $50,000 is $4,315. The federal tax burden on $80,727 is $10,822. Your job will still assume you're only making $50,000, so you'll be on the hook for the extra $6,507 by April 15 of next year, plus possibly a penalty for under-withholding your tax by too much. (You may want to increase your withholding at work or look into an estimated tax payment to avoid that penalty.)

CA tax: CBS took 7% out of your winnings for CA tax, but that was just for estimated tax. You'll need to file a non-resident CA return next year and you'll likely get some of it back. Going back to my example, assuming you're single and take CA's standard deduction, you'd really owe CA $1,573 in tax. Since CBS withheld $2,151, you'd get $578 back from CA. (Again, this all assumes you make $50,000 pre-TPiR and file as a single person.)

NJ tax: I've never dealt with NJ tax, so I have to keep this general. Fill out the CA non-resident tax form first. Then you should be able to take a credit for the actual tax you owed to CA (not the amount CBS withheld), so your NJ tax shouldn't increase or shouldn't increase by much. You may need to submit a copy of your CA tax return to prove to NJ you paid that tax.

Source: I do my own taxes and had to deal with this last year, except it was UT tax for me instead of NJ tax.

Disclaimer: I am not an accountant. Even if you make exactly $50,000, you should still run all calculations yourself (and/or use tax software and/or consult an accountant) and check my work. I'm just trying to give you an idea of what you're in for.

I appreciate this information. I have a family accountant so he will be able to figure out the nuances once the year wraps up and I’ve taken care of all the paperwork. My annual salary (I’m a nurse) is much higher and I was estimating from the outset that this income wouldn’t actually change my tax bracket (if at all), so I can’t imagine that the tax burden would be too high than what I already paid.

I am in the process of accepting the trip. I requested and was granted an exception to choose my dates and accept the trip because of COVID (This episode taped March 2nd, 2020, right before the shutdown). When I sat down with them, they said they we could negotiate the limo cost into airline tickets and I would pay the difference, though nothing is final right now.

That's good they're able to work that out so you can take the trip despite not being local. Hopefully the difference is not that much.
