Poker Game Questions
« on: August 06, 2020, 07:00:29 AM »
A known 2002 playing (along with 2 others prior that date) had the contestant won Poker Game with a perfect all-9 hand. Has there been any instance that a player won with five of a kind with numbers other than a nine, and on an case of 8-7-6-5-4, is the eight treated as a high card or the group as a straight?

There were no straights in Poker Game.

In order to have a five of a kind, one of the prices has to have all three digit numbers the same. I don't remember there being any $888, or $777, or so on (besides $999, of course), prices used.

Which may very well be why Bob always suggested that the contestant pick a prize with lots of 9s in its price.

That was still a terrible strategy for Bob to suggest. In the early days $999 hardly ever showed up as a price in that game.

There was a playing from March of 94 where a contestant passed 3 of a kind. The last prize was worth  $888 and he won with 4 of a kind.

i don’t think Bob always suggested this strategy. Toward the beginning of the game’s run, Bob provided no advice at all. Poker Game when you think about it really isn’t the greatest concept for a pricing game.

If your strategy was to pick the higher priced prizes of the 4, wouldn’t that lead to the “pick prizes with 9’s” advice?

No, because the prices with two 9s in them tended to end in 99 rather than be, say, $919.

A lot of the playings I saw had three prizes with different digits appearing twice (e.g. 525, 660, 818), and the fourth price having three different digits but at least two of the paired digits in it (e.g. 689), so usually it would be three of a kind versus two pair.

Indeed: the one where Roger had to come out on the air and fix the signs.

This petty much sums up the strategy to Poker Game - there isn't one.  Unless you KNOW the actual price of at least one of the items, it's a blind guess.  The strategy comes down to (kinda) playing poker - keep your hand or pass.
