Spoiler below from tonight's episode:

Two teams tied after the Big Sweep!  The tiebreaker was to go down to the penny.

Did this ever happen on the original version of the show?  I don't seem to remember it ever happening.

I don't think it did, but I seem to recall that the rules would've treated it the same as what happened tonight.

I asked this question way back in 2016.

According to Prizes, a tie never happened, at least on the Lifetime/PAX run. If it did, the total would have been broken down into cents. The 1990 season used dollars and cents for totals, and one team won the Big Sweep by 17 cents.

How come they could not get  David Ruprecht to host it again or may be doing the play by play?

Maybe they didn’t want to. There is no need nor obligation to go back to the well.

David Ruprecht is in his early 70s. There is no way he could commit to regularly hosting a game show at that age, especially one where the host's role has been expanded.

Ruprecht did send in an audition tape to be the play by play announcer.

Why not?  Bob Barker and Alex Trebek hosted shows while in their 70s.  Pat Sajak is 74.

If there's a specific reason David Ruprecht can't host, that's one thing.  But ruling him out just because of his age (72)... naah, I don't like that.

especially one where the host's role has been expanded.

How does Leslie Jones' role on Supermarket Sweep compare to Bob's role on TPIR when he was host?
Fun fact: Evelyn Wong, the 5th person to be called on the first show (9/4/72), was actually the very first contestant to directly be called to come on down!  The original first four (Sandy Flornor, Paul Levine, Connie Donnel, Myra Carter) were individually told to stand up, and then, as a group, were invited to come on down.

You don’t need to rule someone out because of their age per se. But you can say, quite truthfully, you envision a show being done differently and with a host that has appeal and familiarity to a target audience. If that means 70-somethings aren’t being considered, that is the nature of the business and has been pretty much consistently throughout the medium’s history.

Yeah, I think to be honest it's not the fairest thing to compare a 60-70 or even 80 year old's in the cases of Barker and Trebek by the end of their runs, hosting of a specific show through those ages, already well established to doing so for years prior, to someone at those same ages starting over fresh with one, even if in Ruprecht's case he had hosted Sweep in the past as well. The context is a just a bit different. A producer is gonna be less likely to oust someone well connected to a show and who knows the ins and outs of dong it for a consistent period of time in the former, whereas in the latter case it's more understandable they'd want someone younger just getting going, both to help establish it and to ensure they have someone who can capably handle the format and taping schedule.

Realistically, Supermarket Sweep will probably be lucky if it gets renewed for another season, at best it probably run another year or two, so the age of the person shouldn’t matter. It’s not a show like Price, or Wheel, or Jeopardy that may very well keep going for another four decades where you’d want someone young who will be there for the long haul and be the face of the show.

The age matters insomuch as you select a host based on who you want to be the face of your show. Realistically you don’t go into producing a program on network TV anticipating a multi-decade run. That’s just not going to happen. But still, you pick who works for your vision.
