Looks like another game, or at least variation, to add to the "they're not too worried about giving away the maximum" list.

I figured that the only way anyone was going to win the $80,000 was if they got three picks (of course) and found the 10 and 20 on the first two - who's going to risk $50,000 for $20,000 more - and even then, it's hard to risk $30,000 with a 50% chance of getting zero. (Okay, who said, "Isn't that pretty much how 100 Grand Game works, assuming one of the last three is obviously over the target?")

Note that, from a purely mathematical standpoint, keeping the $30,000 is the correct move; the expected value of using the third pick is  (1/4 x 80,000) + (1/4 x 35,000) + (1/2 x 0) = $28,750.

I agree with you, but I think your definition of your calculation should be changed to be “the expected value of the contestant’s final winnings.” Unless I misinterpreted what you said, the expected value of third pick would be (1/4 * $50,000) + (1/4 * $5,000) +
(1/2 * -$30,000) = -$1,250. Since the expected value of the third pick is less than zero, the mathematical result remains the same: he should’ve stopped, and he was correct to do so.

True, it's no big deal, but we like pointing out little minutia around here. I find it quite interesting that this week we've had two games played first for the first time.

This is a silly thing to notice, but the border of the green Contestants' Row display doesn't appear to be attached to the podium all the way.  There's a tiny, little strip of the screen that sticks out underneath it, and when there are special graphics that change when people bid like there are this week, you can see the color on it change.  I'm sure no one at the show cares, and they probably shouldn't care, but it's just noticeable enough that once you've seen it, you can't not see it.

They don't appear to have included the toaster from Bonus Game in the rolling jackpot.  That bothers me more than it probably should.

It bothers me a lot, too!  I know it is only $40, but I thought that everything won on stage was added to the total?  On the Ludacris episode, they added the $6 from the Any# piggy bank to his charity total, so why not the $40 here?

With Buck winning the top amount was very unlikely-- either the contestant would bail with $30,000 like Francis did or even $20,000, and definitely would bail with $50,000. The best case scenario would've been picking $10 or $20,000 first then $50,000.

Interesting that both car games were won while Double Prices for a pretty cheap prize was lost and Bonus Game was nearly a wipeout. $8,816 was clearly too much in DP, while the SPs were not super easy in Bonus and the ice cream maker was the toughest of the four to get.

I would put it as a win. In argument, a true WIN in normal Buck is a car + $8000. The $50,000 would be a win of top prize under my car standards.

The "official" definition of a win in a cash game is if the big amount announced at the top of the game is won, which was $80,000.

Of course, Big Money Week didn't exist when those definitions were made, and we don't know if the current staff follows them. Big Money Week screws so badly with the "official win" definition it's totally possible they just don't track them in big money games or they make up their own rules to fit the situation.

We also don't know if the show even tracks wins or "partial wins" like these anymore. We care if a show is a 3/6 or 4/6 for our fan records, but it's totally possible they only care about how the prize budget is affected.

$50,000 functioned as the car today.  If you got that, you won.
