It was difficult for me to believe the contestant chose 0 in Golden Road. Many people in the audience were saying 3, which was correct.

Million Dollar Grand Game was definitely winnable. I would have chosen the detergent at the end (C’mon, it’s Purex! 😊 ). Can you imagine the buildup Bob would have given the final reveal?

Still $1000 for getting a dollar on the wheel. Even after 4 ½ decades.

What a giveaway in Secret “X”. Yep, I mean that.

In closing, wow, they really overshadowed/buried Golden Road today. But, how nice was it to see the showcase winner’s loved ones on stage again?

Back in the good old days, it was all about big cars and SCs to start off a season. Now for the big 50th season opening week, we have just a 79k Golden Road car, merely a 22k(!) showcase, while Grand Game is bloated to 100x its usual winnings, rushed and edited to heck at the climax, and there's been really garish and extravagant prizes such as a house and swimming pool being given away in fee games.

Remnants of Mike Richards, indeed. Awful production values.
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...

Name one production you have worked on, or barring that, a game show you have been on.

I'll wait.

I'm trying to recall if we ever had a show in which Golden Road was played and some other pricing game on the same show had a more expensive prize / cash prize than GR's car.

I don’t want to veer too far off topic, because this is simply a recap thread.

Even though Wayoshi has presumably never worked on a game show before and his criticism comes off as nitpicky, he has every right to point out what he sees as flaws in his favorite show; it’s as simple as that. I’ve never understood the “I’d like to see you try” argument.

Going back on topic, I didn’t watch this episode as it aired because I had class, but I really do think Grand Game was the show’s best chance to give away a million dollars this week. I know Punch-a-Bunch is being played for the money either tomorrow or Friday, but what’s the other game? 1/2 Off?

Probably not on daytime. There was a primetime episode in 2008 when Golden Road was won for a Viper, and then that Clock Game playing happened.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is today's show the first US game show since, well, Dream House to offer a house as a prize?

No, Wheel of Fortune gave one away earlier this year.

Season 12 premiere week, where Plinko was also played. However, GR has an excuse since the $24,000+ '84 Corvette offered was the most expensive prize offered at the time. It was won, though granted $25,000 was the ceiling for a prize offered on CBS until a year later. May 8, 1984 was another good example; the GR prize was also in the $24,000 range with Plinko also played, but once again, the contestant won, won his Showcase as well, and still became the biggest winner in Barker/Carey era history up to that point. Those still feel like "classic GR" moments even if not technically the most expensive prize offered on that show.

But for the big prize on GR to be the THIRD most expensive prize offered on a show? I don't think this has ever happened before.

Still, with Any Number in the lineup, we've now seen all three games featured on 0011D each day for the first three shows this week. Maybe we'll finish things off with Clock and Grocery Game to wind out the week. It was cool to see the A# player try for strategy on that last digit regarding the middle prize, but she should have gone high with her final choices.

Still very fun to watch given the anomalies that were provided, and the ride isn't over yet.

That felt really odd to me as well. Part of the burial/overshadowing I mentioned earlier.

Really surprised Michael took that loss in such good spirit. If I had $100,000 but then gambled and lost it I'd feel so devastated and distraught that I don't think I'd even be able to spin the Big Wheel after that. :-(

A question for the stats keepers: who held the record for the most money lost (i.e. someone won the money and was allowed to bail out with it but gambled and lost it) in a pricing game prior to today? The highest amount I can remember is $20,000 from a Big Money Week playing of It's in the Bag a few years ago.

No TPIR contestant, whether they understand Pay the Rent or not, is ever going to turn down $100,000.

*removes foot from mouth*

I really don't know how I feel about Million Dollar Grand Game.

On one hand, you're offering a 1-in-3 shot at a Million Dollars. It's exciting. It builds to a big finish. It's better than both of the million dollar games so far in both concept and execution. You have a real, tempting chance of crowning a big winner. It could be one of the show's marquee moments.

On the other hand... yeah, I really have a feeling that this is what Drew was talking about when he said "there's a couple of moments from the opening week where I really had to go backstage and collect myself...one night I couldn't sleep thinking, 'Is it wrong to offer a million dollars? Maybe people would be tempted to take a chance that they shouldn't have.' So I had to go through this whole emotional thing."

If you're going to be on Deal or No Deal or Millionaire or Greed or whatever, you know ahead of time and you can emotionally prepare yourself for risking and potentially losing life-changing amounts of money. TPIR is not like that. An hour ago you were just an audience member on a park bench hoping to win a kitchen or a trip, not even knowing there was anything special about the taping you were going to attend, and now they're asking you if you want to risk your mortgage. Michael seemed to feel all right about it on the air, and maybe he doesn't need the money, but... man. Losing $100K feels very different than losing a few thousand in prizes.

The tiny house is... neat, I guess. Stephen was a great contestant and I was happy to see him win, even if it's all but certain he'll only be accepting the $5,000. But it's a little weird that Golden Road with all of its pomp and hype got overshadowed by what felt like any ordinary playing of Secret X. It's moments like this I wish they really had some more time to build it up and make it feel special, but the show was already needing to be edited to pieces at that point. I'm sure they took a second in-studio to let the moment sink in, but we see none of this on the air.

I know --- is being played for the money either tomorrow or Friday, but what’s the other game? 1/2 Off?

Won't say what it is here, but I will say it has been spoiled by the promo announcing Alexis as the new model.
Quote from: Bill Todman
"The sign of a good game, is when you don't have to explain it every day. The key is not simplicity, but apparent simplicity. Password looks like any idiot could have made it up, but we have 14 of our people working on that show. There is a great complexity behind the screen. It requires great work to keep it simple."

Related: is this the first time Golden Road was played for the third-most-expensive non-showcase prize in its episode?
