2022 MLB Season
« on: March 10, 2022, 04:40:05 PM »
I am starting the thread with the news that sources have told ESPN that the 99-day lockdown has ended. And the league & the MLB Players Association have reached a tentative new collective-bargaining agreement for a 162 game season slated to begin in early April along with Spring training beginning this Sunday.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33470321/sources-mlb-union-reach-tentative-agreement-new-cba-salvage-162-game-season

Among the things from the agreement include:
  • The minimum salary of governing players with less than three years of league service has jumped from $570,500 to $700,000, growing to $780,000. And the distribution of a bonus pool worth $50 million among younger players who have yet to reach salary arbitration.
  • Player uniforms will feature advertising for the first time, with patches on jerseys and decals on batting helmets.
  • A 45-day window for MLB to implement rules changes -- among them a pitch clock, ban on shifts, and larger bases in the 2023 season.
  • The National League adopting the designated hitter.

This is fantastic news.  While there may be arguments or a lack of excitement (mainly from the small market teams), this a good thing overall for both side & all parties.

Not too thrilled about 12 teams for the postseason, but I'm okay with that.  The fact is: baseball is back.  And much sooner than I thought!

The season starts April 7. Look for doubleheaders to accommodate a 162-game schedule. The free agency circus starts tonight.

Fortunately it looks like it'll be normal double headers and none of the 7 inning stuff.  It was necessary in 2020.  Though it was close enough to where it was going to be necessary this season.

One of my fears came true in that the lack of a salary cap but the introduction of a lottery.  Though it's not much of a fear; just pettiness.  Unlike in the NBA or in the NFL, you can draft someone first overall but you won't be about to enjoy the guy's services for about half a decade

We knew the pitcher hitting in the NL had to end, I'm just sad to watch it go... also, who wanted the advertising on the uniforms, the owners or the players???

Braves 1B Freddie Freeman is now all but headed for another team as the Braves get 1B Matt Olson from Oakland in a massive trade. Olson is a lifetime .252 hitter, hitting 39 homers last year. So far the trade is getting high marks.

Two more off the board: Former Astro Carlos Correa signed a 3 year, $105 million dollar deal with the Minnesota Twins, and the Red Sox signed Trevor Story to a 6 year, $140 million dollar deal. ESPN is reporting Story could be shifting over to play 2nd base with Xander Bogaerts already playing shortstop.

We have our first no-hitter of the season, with the Mets using five pitchers to throw a combined no-hitter against the Phillies. It's the 17th combined no-hitter in Major League history, and the second in Mets' franchise history (Johan Santana 2012).

Speaking of a no-no, there was a chance we could have had the first perfect game of 2022, but Kershaw did not finish his start early on (as he's not that young anymore & returning from injury).  Several people were not thrilled with that move, but I totally understood it.

There is a massive baseball ban in place, as Trevor Bauer has been suspended by MLB for a couple years or so.  Soon after, there is another woman that has "come forward" & is willing to testify it appears.  That ban might become lifetime, but for now it's over 300 games
