The Masters 2022
« on: April 09, 2022, 12:33:33 PM »
A place to discuss the year's most prestigious golfing event.  The two biggest stories are rather tremendous.  World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler rolling so far into the weekend, with a record tying 5-shot lead (-8) won several of the most recent PGA tour events.  The other one is someone you may have heard off.  Tiger Woods, a man in his mid-40s & with one healthy leg, extended his clean streak to 22-0 in terms of made cuts at Augusta as a professional.

Woods ain't winning, but it's a win that he'll be participating in the weekend, let along participating in general.  Tiger in golf is a win (at least for the networks and businesses).  The easiest call would be to crown Scheffler.  However, everyone with a lead like his went on to clinch the green jacket (save for the first 5-shot leader).  Plus, he dominated on Friday during the period where the weather was a major factor & not in a positive way.

After Scottie, you have a fleet of very good players in red figures, including 3 past major winners, 2 at Augusta, and the defending champion.  Following Schwartzel, IM, Lowry, Niemann, and Matsuyama the notables include Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Rory, and Kisner.

Action is currently underway; CBS takes over at 3:00 PM Eastern.  Sunday's Final round is slated for 2:00 PM Eastern on CBS

Yes, at this point the fact that Tiger Woods was able to be there and make it through all four rounds should be considered a win for him, no matter where he wound up on the scoreboard.

Given that at one point it wasn't even certain he'd still have two legs to walk on, this is a major comeback to be able to be walking that far for several days in a row.

ITA.  I had my doubts here, but as the event approached, I was optimistic that he'd be okay.  No way I thought he'd win, but given the fact that he's familiar with the course & probably would've sat out if he wasn't confident he'd make it through four rounds in full, I was at ease.  For the most part.

BTW, I found it a bit hilarious watching PTI that when they opened with Tiger as the top story, they had to drop the line that Scheffler won the event (it was the second story) for a second before going back to Woods.  FWIW, everyone said all week that no matter who wins, it'll take a back seat to Tiger Woods and his miracle

I will admit I do not watch much golf, even though I understand the game. I am a big fan of holey moley, and played myself with cups. and wanted to give the official game a try and I just watched the last day hopeing it would be more organized by that point. (I assume the most people watch on the final day.) I enjoyed watching golf. but I had a lot of trouble figuring out what was going on. and the announcers were not always talking about Golf. (at one point they were talking about a American football player that went to the same high school as one of the golfers.) and the broadcast was all over the place. and the winner was barely broadcast. (they seem to focus on a long blonde haired guy from Australia). to be fair, maybe they just ran out of things to talk about due to this event going on for so long. Though it was cool to see Tiger Woods interview. Do they make it more concise on the west cost broadcast. (The be clear I do not want to see just a quick highlights, but maybe three hours a day like most sports in the usa.) I would usually not post this, and save it for bigger fans that understand it better. but it seems very quiet here. and maybe this is a area people can jump on and talk about how it is shown when you are, and if it differs from my experience.

I am going to put it more simply here due to my last post being so long. To put it simply, more golf, more liner (If you go on the bounce around that much, maybe just use a split screen), and more on the game at hand. (at least on the final day). I understand it's hard to edit. but ya.

If you’re not a regular viewer of the PGA, you are definitely going to be bored with the product.  That being said, your made point is accurate.  The content can be better.

This was a big golf event, so the TV time is much longer than the standard 3 hours or 3.5 hours you’d get from most everything else.

The announcers going off-topic happens with every sport.  You probably don’t get it a ton in Tennis, but you’ll have that happen in football, basketball, and definitely baseball.  In this case, there was a connection with the eventual winner and the American football player in discussion.  Scottie Scheffler & Matthew Stafford went to the same school, and the latter had won his first Super Bowl the same day Scheffler won his first event.  The connection reaches LA baseball star Clayton Kershaw.  The link was Texas, Los Angeles, CA, and winning.

The winner was broadcast a ton; the blond player you referred to was paired with him so there was enough focus with Scottie.  Typically, though, they will have to focus on other final pairings that were in contention (Rory, IM, Schwartzel,, etc).  Finally, they obviously had to focus on Tiger, another great player in Dustin Johnson, and the previous champion Hideki (who succeeded DJ).

In brief, golf on TV has its pros and cons.  You have to watch regularly to get the game.  That, and pick your spots.  I have no plans on watching this coming weekend; I usually catch more golf in the summer, but when it comes to big events or events with star studded names, I’m likely going to respect it more often than not.

Finally, it is quiet in here for sure.  There aren't that many golf fans on the boards here.  During the MLB postseason, if you're into baseball, you've have more interaction there, and if you're around during the football season, they'll be more traffic for sure

Thank you for explain golf to this newbie SeaBreeze341. I loved golf game apps as a kid (like let's golf 3 (abandoned) and golf star by com2us. You are correct, baseball (at least the radio station dad likes) gets really off topic during the off-season "hot stove". I think the biggest problem was I assumed that the final day of the Masters were going to be made to assume more casual fans will watch just the last day, since it is the biggest golf event. Like the Olympics assume no one knows the sport (like gymnastics and ice-skating). Thank you for not taking it offensively. I meant my post constructively, and it came out wrong. The way that they chose to do The broadcast is fine, it was different from what I expected, but I did not warrant me flaming it on the forum. I definitely was not suggesting not showing Tiger Woods, as he is probably the most famous golf player ever, at least in the US. (even if you know nothing about golf you probably know who Tiger Woods is, he even has a game on a 2000s non-smart texter phone). Holley Moley is a mini golf show with wipeout (The obstacle show, not the 80s game show) style obstacle courses, on ABC, for those that do not know, since I did mentioned it in first post. I might watch more regular golf when I have time. As you said, Summer leaves more time to watch things.

More conversation would have been nice, even if I tried to spark it the wrong, and in a to blunt way. I guess this is in the left field area on a price is right, not a golf or sport forum. I grew up with baseball as my primary sport (as a spectator, not player), so I might be able to put my two cents in those posts, as you mentioned they get more traffic.

No worries Game Girl.  FWIW, and IMO, there was nothing wrong with your post, and you "weren't wrong" as it relates to the contents of your post.  I think it went within the lines of disagreement and pointing out facts/examples, which is what happens throughout G-R dot net.  Really there were some points that I actually agreed with you on, but I felt that I had to make mention to a couple other areas that a casual viewer might not be familiar with.  I appreciate your explanation; no big deal.

This is the out-of-left-field section.  Anything goes.  Well, anything within reason of course!  It features other gameshow talk more often than not, and more than sports, music, and whatever else.

Welcome to the forums BTW!  Nice you have you here!
