That is an all-time bad beat on Shell Game.

To that point, I wish Drew would save the “bonus game” spiel until AFTER the contestant wins all four shells.

Do you think it's because Drew is seemingly jinxing the player by talking bonus implications too early?

As I said on Discord, the thing is, if he doesn't say it. Contestant wins 4th SP.....contestant is most likely going to run to the prize. Now they have to corral the contestant to get him or her back on stage to go for the bonus. Explaining it after 3 perfect is the right spot for it.

My fix would be: after the contestant says “higher/lower,” Drew hints at the bonus by saying “if you get this right, you’ll also get a chance at a bonus game,” and then the reveal occurs. The contestant will then have to stay and listen. That way, he can save time in case the contestant doesn’t get the fourth item right or fully go into the rules if they do.

But, do they do that now?  Thinking of seeing Bonus (for example) where the same situation occurs.  Seemed like they usually still wnat to wait and see where the bonus actually was before going off to see the prizes?

The difference is that there is no additional Bonus for Bonus Game

Oof. We were one away from a perfect show twice, and I was feeling good about it especially after Lucky Seven and Grand Game were won. But it was still a pretty good day.

And yeah, I also wish Drew would wait until after all four shells are won before talking about the bonus.

I agree with Drew stating the Shell Game bonus after the contestant gets the first three correct. The reason is that if he doesn't state and the contestant gets the fourth one right, they may start jumping up and down and/or run toward the prize before Drew has a chance to mention the game isn't over. Then Drew has to get the contestant back to the turntable and calm them down before it can continue. Not only does that take time the show doesn't have, it's also a bad look on TV. So it's better to prep the contestant in advance for that possibility so they know to keep their cool.

Call me old school, but I’m in the camp of not revealing the bonus or bringing it up until all four chips are besides all the shells.  The object of this game is to win the prize described prior to the start of the game.  You win by having a chip next to the shell concealing the ball.  That’s the purpose.

That being said, it is not a big deal the way Carey does it.  As mentioned elsewhere, I’m not going to sign a petition “forcing” Drew to wait until it’s in play.  That’s a waste of time.  Furthermore, anything that trends away from what makes him uncomfortable is not good.  The best version of Drew Carey is Drew Carey being himself.

Very valid points on why it’s necessary to bring it up in advance.  The contestant will definitely celebrate and run to the prize (if it’s a trip, who knows what he or she will do), and it would get out of control.  Because of that,  I have to agree with Adam & LiteBulb.  For the most part.   What would work is for Drew to simply mention that there is a bonus (after the third item), but not going into specifics of what it is.  The contestant pretty much isn’t going to know anyway.

At the end of the day, it’s no big deal, especially here.  It was a bad beat the way things played out, but in general, the contestant still had a chance to win, and the bonus was not a guarantee.  In this episode, Elizabeth had a 75% to win (unlike in Bonus Game, she has control on what counts based on her selections).   Even though I mentioned it would be best not to bring up the cash prize (just saying there's a bonus instead), it's fine.  Still a 25% chance at it had there been perfect pricing.

The other thing mentioned in the past was the lack of suspense.  Every second in TPIR is so valuable, so while I love a little buildup, learning of Elizabeth's fate was well done (albeit in defeat)

I think you actually meant to say, "anything that trends away from what makes him comfortable".

Whoops!  My fault; I did mean that.  I probably debated on whether to actually say "makes him comfortable" or "trends toward uncomfortable" before possibly getting caught up with something else before hitting send.

Thanks for catching that error (though I can't edit it now); sorry about that!

Not a problem! Just now noticed your response (wish we had a longer time to edit).
