Pluto TV to launch Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune Channels
« on: July 11, 2022, 10:36:47 AM »
https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/pluto-tv-streaming-jeopardy-wheel-of-fortune-24-7.html

According to Josef Adalian at Vulture, Pluto TV has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to launch a 24/7 channel devoted to vintage episodes of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, which is slated to debut on August 1. And Pluto TV also has plans to use both series as anchors for a significant expansion and consolidation of game show content on its platform as they just moved their existing game show-related channels into a new game show hub.

Basically Christmas in July (or August)!

While it would be phenomenal for an 1983 and 1984 start to Wheel and Jeopardy, respectively, it's my understanding that it's possible the channels will feature a mix of retro and modern.  So it could be a combination of 80s & 90s stuff, and/or post 2000 material.  Whatever they do, looks like I'll be fine with it as this was nothing more than a dream this time 24 hours ago (or a period prior to the news breaking)

I would have preferred a classic MTV service to launch on that particular day with things like The Week In Rock, Remote Control, Headbangers' Ball, Dial MTV, or other classics, but more importantly, it will great to finally see Alex Trebek back again! With that said, I'm hoping for some of the rarer seasons (1983-84, 1985-86, '86-87, '87-88, '90-'91, '91-92, '93-'94 for Wheel), pre-Sushi Bar era Jeopardy! so that those respective shows could finally see the light of day. If waiting at least six months for new TPIR: Baker Era content is a bit too much, this should certainly provide some excitement for a show I have literally watched for over three decades nearly every night.

Here's the first promo (that I've seen) for the new channel. It's being advertised as being "classic episodes" so hopefully there's a good variety. Features a mid '00s Jeopardy clip and a couple 2010s Wheel clips but some older sounding audio clips as well.

'00s-era Jeopardy! is fine. It's not exactly vintage with things like the 1984-97 theme and I would have preferred the pre-Sushi Bar era set shows since almost all of the unknown shows on the J! Archive are from the first 12 seasons, but you're in the era of unlimited champs (unless if it's the 2002-03 season), specials like the Tournament of Champions, and most importantly, we'll get to see Alex again. Its just old enough for it to feel fresh to most viewers. Unfortunately, they are picking Wheel during the show's absolute nadir, with both of those clips being from 2017 (the first one being from May 25). Once again, I'll stick to Adam S. (aka wheelfan82)'s uploads from original and GSN copies from the '80s, '90s, and '00s, back when you had more intricately-written puzzles, elements like the Free Spin, Surprise, and Jackpot, no Prize Puzzle on every show, and of course, no Million Dollar Wedge.

If I had to guess from that clip alone, it looks like Pluto will start the Jeopardy! run with Season 20. It's an appropriate place since that's when they abolished the five-time champ rule. Assuming they play that whole season without any loops, they'll get to the Ken Jennings episodes by August 4th or 5th.

Wheel is completely different. The promo has a Million Dollar logo in the background, which leads me to believe the earliest they'll start is season 26. However, with the Free Spin having its last hurrah there, Season 27 with the Free Play seems more likely.

They just used the current Season 39 title card for the promo, hence the million dollar logo being there. I was a bit disappointed that they used a clip from 2017. Can't judge what they'll do by a few seconds of a promo, but I really hope they're going further back in the archives than just 5-6 years.

So, here's the 411:

They are not streaming channels (yet...this could be coming later). They are in the On Demand section. For Wheel, its various episodes from Seasons 34-37. For Jeopardy, it's the Season premieres from Seasons 1-19, and various episodes from Seasons 19-33.

250 Wheel episodes and 242 J!.

This appears to be what J! was streaming on Netflix a while back and Wheel is the pool of episodes that Netflix had to choose from.

While this is disappointing, especially on the Wheel side, it's still nice to have the ability to stream them somwhere.

adding to the "this is just the Netflix material" argument - Season 1 Episode 1 (as listed there) is actually the Pilot (again) from 1984

I would've doubted that they would advertise "new exclusive channels" then trot out the same episodes that have already been seen, though they never said anything like "rarely seen" as they did for TPIR:Barker.

Hopefully an actual "live" channel will have more episodes or they quickly add more to the on demand section. Could be a matter of "short notice, here's what's available now, more to come" but I'm not holding my breath.

the link given via a recent promotional email from Jeopardy! lists a live channel (would drop the link here, but it's not active yet)

Can’t say I’m surprised at what they’re offering for Wheel. Guess we’ll see what else they’ll have to offer, but I’m not holding my breath. I kind of figured Pluto would stream a little earlier than 2013 for Jeopardy!, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they went a decade earlier after a while.
