There should be some kind of penalty if the pitcher turns out to be clean, like ejecting whoever requested the check. That only slows things down.

Couldn't agree more.  Maybe not off the bat, but eventually.  They're already checking the pitchers.

Anyway, prediction time!  Philadelphia in 4, New York & Houston in 5, and Los Angeles in 3.  I guess I'd love to see Seattle advance, and it would be great if Atlanta knocked off Philly for a chance to repeat (or to create a 1996 repeat of MLB events).  I made a last-minute swap since it's tough that all four home teams advance (lower number seeds).  With my luck, I'll go 3 for 4 thanks to San Diego, but I'm more likely to be 0-4

Right now, Atlanta's ace Max Fried is chased after three-plus as the Phillies have a 4-1 lead. Didn't help that the Braves left the bases loaded in the first.

To further add insult to injury, they just left them loaded again, and then right after that, Philly took advantage when they had men on (post Harper intentional walk) to get to 6-1

Philly escapes, I guess.  1-0 series lead and ownership of home field for now.

Meanwhile, in the ALDS, Seattle dominating; Verlander still in for Houston, but with 80 pitches just about, but within 4 innings

The Phillies are in the catbird's seat considering they won that game 1 and haven't thrown Wheeler or Nola yet in this series. The Braves hit like kindergarteners with runners in scoring position.

Houston Astros stun the Seattle Mariners by scoring 2 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th to beat Seattle 8-7, thus taking Game 1.

This has truly been a postseason of comebacks thus far.

What comes around, goes around.  Seattle was on the positive side over Toronto, but the opposite today.  Totally a painful loss since they crushed JV.  We'll see how they handle this adversity.  The WC game without a comeback just would've meant Game 3, whereas a lost chance at stealing home field is still one game, a loss on the road.

FWIW, the announcers were pimping Altuve, and at worst for Houston, that just pulls to within one. While Munoz set up the successful comeback, Sewald was so close to the escape and couldn't close before the 3-run shot.  I actually was thinking that Seattle needed to have a decent 9th in case Houston got to people on before Alvarez showed up.  Anyway, too bad, and that after they took out Altuve

Game 2 of the Atlanta/Philly series has been delayed due to rain moving in from the west. From the size of the system, it could be around 8 PM ET before first pitch is thrown.

Braves even things up with a 3-0 win. No homers, just some fundanental ball--get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in. Kyle Wright continues to impress on the mound.

Atlanta deserved that win as they played fundamentals while Philadelphia did not. If Hoskins fields that grounder with 2 on and 2 out in the 6th, the game might still be 0-0 as I type this. Friday's game will be the first playoff baseball in Philly since 2011 and Citizens Bank Park will be rockin'.

Meanwhile, San Diego ties L.A. at 1-1 with a wild 5-3 win that featured home runs, great defense, unbelievable pitcher escapes, and a goose on the field. Yes, a goose. Had the Dodgers come back, that goose would have immediately earned cult status in Chavez Ravine. And Petco Park in SD will host its first playoff baseball game with fans since 2006, so that place is going to be crazy on Friday as well.

With rain moving in, Game 2 of the Yankees/Guardians series has been postponed to Friday. Seattle/Houston will still go as planned this afternoon.

Charlie Morton and Aaron Nola are the starters for game 3 of Atlanta/Philadelphia (4:30 EDT, FS1). They had rain overnight in Philly but it should be all clear to play at first pitch. Caesars Sportsbook picks Philly, FanDuel (and my brother) picks Atlanta. Expect the fans to create a hostile environment.
