I believe this was the first Jackpot show taped. I assume the setups were meant to be easy, but there were 2-3 instances it was shockingly not the case tonight.

-Cliff: They tried to balance out giving away like 80-120k. I never like these setups with a below 30 2nd SP then suddenly 50 last SP, but ultimately the contestant played badly.
-OWP: I thought both Vietnam and Sweden looked quite high. I guess the logic they were going for was, "lol the 4 digit trip is too cheap of course, primetime!" but I found this very, very ineffective and overall a poorly conceived setup.
-Pocket - No complaints here. The fact she almost lost just shows how broken the change distribution is, though.
-NoT - The 1996 date really stuck out as "oh boy, super easy mode!" at first, but then the mac & cheese was not THEN and Pam spray was, so they got me there. Still, 1996....
-L7 - my main WTF of this show. People go 5 or a bit lower for the 2nd digit when the car is this much. An 8 there was completely inappropriate, and -475 shows they did want this won.... just a major gaffe from the setup people here.
-Clock - no complaints here.

If nothing else, we got a historic moment this decade in the SCs. Would have been funny if it failed.
S5x... the show's stabilized into something decent now, I guess...

The last taping report:

This is the first of the primetime specials that I attended from my November trip.  This was the morning show while the afternoon show aired on January 10th.  Tris, Henry (from the Holiday Singles special) and Kevin Slattery joined me for this episode.  We knew that these were prime time shows, but we did not know what to expect.

Cliff Hangers did not go according to plan.  I even spoke of some strategies while we were walking into the studio. Unfortunately, I did not talk to Nathaniel and crew….. until later.
One Wrong Price looked easy, but truthfully, all of the trips looked like they were wrong.  Guess too much Price can muddle your mind about Vietnam.
Pocket Change was played well.  I would have not fared as well.
Now Or Then’s twist was inspired by Jacob (our Superfan).  Alison just turned 18 if I recalled.  She to me, is one of the all time players.

Even before George finished describing the Audi in Lucky 7, I turned to the contestant’s wife and told her to guess all 5s.  Don’t panic even if you have $1 left with one number left.  Don’t panic.  She got my attention right after the playing and said I should have listened to you.

Clock Game was played very well indeed.

While the prizes were being described, I was getting the attention of the Cal State Northridge crew.  I signaled to them that Alison was over.  Bid $1.  You will be assured of the win.  Nathaniel was communicating with me when he was asking are you sure.  And Drew gave me and my contact the look as we were going to break.  Alison was crying after the show, but I told her that she did well and will go down as one of the best Now or Then players.  One more thing: the cheerleader crew’s cheer went longer than what aired.

I got to live my lifelong dream on December 19, 2023.

Some thoughts on the value of the cleaning prize Alison won:

When I won "house cleaning for a year" in 2019, they gave me $2,080 in cash, which was calculated as $80/cleaning session * 26 cleaning sessions/year. Accounting for inflation, the house cleaning sessions are probably now $100-$125/session. They told us it was monthly for 5 years, so that's 60 sessions. 60 sessions * $100-$125/session = $6,000 - $7,500, probably given as cash.

Otherwise, a friend of mine on FB had a friend in the audience, and that friend of a friend stated this was supposed to air 1/3/24 originally. Delaying this by 6 weeks made today's daytime show and today's nighttime show overlap quite a bit; both had playings of NoT and Clock Game, and both had a trip to France in the showcase. A bit awkward, but I'm assuming they had a good reason to delay this episode.

Now that you mention this Brian, it seemed like they they were throwing dates up in the air for all the Primetime shows that were taped in November.

Interesting this was the first special taped but the last one in this set to air, I wonder why the waited on it.

That might've been the toughest setup I've ever seen in Cliff Hangers. I was not expecting the can opener to be that cheap or the iron to be $50.

I thought St. Lucia was a pretty easy pick in One Wrong Price, it was just too low compared to the other two.

Nice win in Pocket Change, I thought she had the $2.00 envelope on her first envelope the way Drew was talking about her having luck.

Wow, going back almost 30 years with the Then date tonight. It was a little surprising the Pam and not the mac and cheese was the other Then along with the SOS pads. The maid service was a nice add on, but either just offering cash or something to add to the home theater piece of the prize package would've been nicer.

Ouch, that 8 was a killer in Lucky $even. I thought it would be a lower number also.

I was hoping a bit Alison ended up not being over on her Showcase bid since she was such a great contestant, but I wasn't that optimistic. The $1 bid worked out, and we got to see the whole cheer team on the stage at the end.

When was the last time we had a $1 bid in the showcase? It has happened rarely over the years, but not since January 2016. I had quit watching it for a while when Bob retired when I was 9 going on 10 years old, but started up again in January 2016 and have not seen it since then until tonight.

It's actually not -- we still have 074SP coming at some point.

I don't think I recall it even happening in or around January 2016.  I think we have to go back to 2014 for the last time someone bid $1.

Of course, the January 2016 timeframe might just be based on what you've seen since you started watching again, and not necessarily the last time it took place, as mentioned.  However, during chat, it looks like no dollar showcase bids since Season 42.

TBH it was nice to see it, even though a $20,000 bid has been safe enough for the most part over the past decade

That might've been the toughest setup I've ever seen in Cliff Hangers. I was not expecting the can opener to be that cheap or the iron to be $50.

Though, just following the standard bidding suggestions for the items would have still resulted in winning $80,000, which is not a bad win for that game at any time of day :)

Cliff - oof, they wanted a partial win.  20-30-40 would have paid decently.

OWP - meh

Pocket Change - what a win, got two wrong, could only afford two wrong, just enough!

Now or Then - finally, a "bonus for getting all of them" add-on!  I've been wanting that for a while.

Lucky Seven - damn, they wanted that won, 5-5-5-5 would have won it because of course it would, it's primetime.

Clock - nice

Showcases - always love seeing the $1 bid get rewarded there.  I know it's almost petty sometimes in IUFBs but to be at the tail end and be able to turn to them and say "I'm SO sure you're over I'm going to stake my chances on it, screw going for DSW"...

True, although a LFAT knows showcases are never under $20,000, and combined with the prices never being in the range of $xx,000-$xx,250, $20,251 is a safe bid to make if you're sure the other contestant is over, that's at least what I would do if I was sure the other contestant was over. Speaking of which, when was the last time a showcase price was under $20,000 and/or in the range of $xx,000-$xx,250?

Nice comeback for Nathaniel, missing out on $250,000 on Cliff Hangers, but winning an almost $60,000 showcase. It's rare to see someone bid $1 on their showcase, ESPECIALLY in primetime, but I love it when it works. Makes me wonder why more people don't do this.

Because you have to be SURE they're over because, if not, you're toast. And with showcases, its easy not to be completely sure your opponent has gone over.

Lots of times, I was sure the contestant had gone over and was fooled by that contestant being 5 digits off the ARP (being sure a $35,000 bid was too high and the showcase was north of $45,000 comes to mind).
