new mobile format
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:15:54 PM »
long time lurker, first post (and in tech support, no less....)

First of all, the new forum design and layout is excellently designed and brilliantly executed.

I often browse the site from my smartphone, not being near a pc often at all.  with the former software, the main site would display with all features available.
now, there is a "wap" version of the forums that displays by default from a mobile phone and I have already grown quite attached to it for reading threads.  There appears to be no way to switch back to the regular website, however.  Am I missing this, or is it possibly a feature yet to be added?

Thanks for the help, and the great new site!

If memory serves me right, if you are accessing this site via your phone, you get the WAP version only with no option to switch to regular version.

(If that's not what you're asking, I apologize....please let me know.)

that was indeed the question.    i realize i am in the minority with this one, because my phone (samsung blackjack) can actually handle the full site.  the wap site is great for the forums, but it would be nice to be able to see graphics, and access other parts of the site.

thanks for the quick reply

I have an update for you.  I may stand corrected on what I said.....there may be a way.

    * http://www.golden-road.net/index.php?wap
    * http://www.golden-road.net/index.php?wap2
    * http://www.golden-road.net/index.php?imode

When you access Golden-Road.net via a wireless device, our software automatically attempts to detect whatever protocol you're using.  Edit your URL and remove the ?(mode) and see if that works.

thanks for the tip, it partially works.

I've been doing some research on this, and the issue seems to lie in "user agent identification."  pocket ie for windows mobile 5 does not allow this to be changed as on some browsers (at least not without some complex registry hacks).

is there a way to add a link on the wap site to temporarily disable UA id?  some sites allow this (google being one of them).  it seems simple enough, a single line of code on the main site and the wap site to toggle back and forth between the two.

thanks for all the attention my suredly insignificant problem is recieving!

Now, *that* I don't know.

I haven't touched those small pocket PCs.  I don't know much about them besides that some of them run pocket versions of Windows.  I, personally, don't have a use for those at the moment (same goes for a laptop).

found a workaround.  opera mobile allows you to id as  desktop machine (or mobile device) and also does a wonderful job at resizing the "regular" site for the mobile format, thanls to proper coding.

hope this helps anyone with a similar problem in the future.
