I'm amazed at what I'm reading here today.  What is everyone's problem with the Ten Chances contestant?

He went right to town making very educated guesses at all three prizes.  It became very evident after exhausting his 17,xx0 and 19,xx0 guesses that he didn't realize that 15,xx0 was a reasonable guesses, and figured something must have ended in a non-zero price.  It's called "being nervous."  I thought he played the game extremely well, and for those who say he was looking at the audience, you've never seen Ten Chances played in studio.  There are about 3,250 fingers sticking up and you have no clue what people are trying to say.

While I agree the game did drag on, and I don't like playings that take forever, his gameplay techniques were just fine.  Very surprising comments from everyone here.

You know, I was just discussing this with John...it seems to me that a lot of us have been "in the know" about TPIR for so long that we start to forget what it's like to be an average viewer.  An average viewer doesn't know that there are patterns in games with chance elements, doesn't know that there are tricks to figuring out the ones digits of certain prices, doesn't know that the prices in Ten Chances and Safe Crackers always end with 0...and as a result, they can't always play their games the same way that you or I would.  Now....or Then immediately comes to mind -- we don't even need to look at the prices to win that game!  Your average contestant has to go about playing that one completely differently, and as a result, it's inevitable that they're going to do things that seem stupid to people who pay as much attention to the nuances of the show as we do.

I think some of us would do well to keep that in mind the next time we're preparing to criticize a contestant's gameplay.
