Young Contestants
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:57:49 PM »
Is it true that back early when the show just got on its feet, people younger than 18 could've been a contestant or at least be in the audience? I was looking at some of the older clips and saw WAY young people there.

I don't know about eligibility as possible contestants, but there most definitely were children in the audience of the earlier Price Is Right episodes.
Fun fact: Evelyn Wong, the 5th person to be called on the first show (9/4/72), was actually the very first contestant to directly be called to come on down!  The original first four (Sandy Flornor, Paul Levine, Connie Donnel, Myra Carter) were individually told to stand up, and then, as a group, were invited to come on down.

I thought as much, anyone know why they stopped allowing them? Too much ruckus or what? And if so, a date would be nice! :D

I remember seeing kids in the audience as late as 1987 but it might be later than that. With the exploding popularity, it makes sense to fill all the seats with elidgeable contestants.

Thought so, okay then, why allow the younger people to be in the audience if they weren't going to be called or at least potentially be called, isn't this just a waste of possible space for eager contestants.

I'm sure in the early years, they were just looking for seat-fillers.  Children < 18 occupy seats just as well as adults do.  However, as matt said, with the popularity of the show increasing, those seats were offered to eligible contestants only.

That makes sense, especially with the show  being "new" and such. Thanks again!

Allowing children into the studio probably also allowed their parent(s) to attend the show more easily, since they didn't have to find a babysitter or daycare.

Another good point, but glad you brought up babysitting. What if the children weren't quiet? They did they just edit those pieces out?

They threatened the kids beforehand. I find that always works.  :-)

I'd guess that they wouldn't edit it out. I mean, it's not like it's hurting anything. (Of course, this was during the time when the audience didn't shout out suggestions, so it'd be easier to hear, I guess)

Hahha! Good one! lolz

Yeah, I wonder if they edited out. Maybe they allowed a certain age limit? And yet again, younger kids were less rambunctious back then as well.

This is gonna sound dumb I could've sworn I saw a young kid sitting off to the side of contestants row during an MDS.  I can't remember the date but I believe it was in May

Not completely condemning that possibility, it very well could have been a relative of the staff.
