September 8, 1975: first anniversary week hourlong special
« on: July 21, 2006, 12:21:25 AM »
This show was aired during the week to celebrate TPiR’s 3rd anniversary.  Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Reilly had appeared the previous week to congratulate.

Unfortunately, the quality of this show – particular that second half – is bad so it’s very difficult to make out some details.  Also, a 3rd beauty named Barbara helped Janice and Dian out this week.  But with Barbara having brown hair and Dian having a brown wig, it’s difficult to tell them apart sometimes (and even Janice because of the picture).  I’ll do the best I can.

Thanks to Nick for this show!

Tape Date: August 30, 1975
Production Number: ONE HOUR #1581-D

Beauties: Janice, Dian (with wig to look like Anitra), and Barbara (bruntte), wearing white dresses with red dots
Bob’s wardrobe: Black suit, bluish shirt, blue tie

After Johnny reads the slate, a sign is held up saying:

WELCOME ABOARD THE TITANIC.  ENJOY YOUR TRIP!!!

This week’s shows used a light box that basically had the lights but not the gold surround.

A fortune in fabulous prizes may go to these people today if they know when, in our super anniversary show special, the price is right!

Marie Heirknow (young with brown hair, flower shirt, and yellow pants), COME ON DOWN!
Cathy Delvatio (young with brown hair and white dress), come on down!
Jeanette Cabba (young with brown hair, flower shirt, and blue pants), come on down!
and Ruby Watkins (young black woman with yellow shirt and white pants), come on down!

You are the first four contestants onnnn The Price is Right!  And now here’s the star of The Price is Right, BOB BARKER!

The camera doesn’t even show the green part of the doors to avoid giving the first game away…

Bob simply mentions that every show this week is one hour.

Item #1 – Hooded chair imported from Italy (turntable/Cue 25/Dian)

Marie: 850
Cathy: 900
Jeanette: 475
Ruby: 350

ARP: $795 for Jeanette

Jeanette will walk the Golden Road.

It all starts with a 16oz can of Del Monte Peaches (“Artwork” cue, for lack of a better name)
Then she can win a Null pine Bar Set (Cue unknown/Janice)
That can help her win a C.A. Robinson Pinball Machine (Cue 65/Barbara)
And finally, the big 5 digit prize is a Cadillac Eldorado in Iridescent Silver Blue with padded vinyl roof, leather, AM/FM stereo, 8 track, and cruise control (Cue 18/Janice & Dian?)

Peaches are 41¢
Bar set is _50.         Chooses 4.  $450 RIGHT
Pinball machine is 1_45   Chooses 0.  $1045 RIGHT   (toughie)
Cadillac is 12_84      Chooses 5.  $12084 WRONG

At this point, the price reveals used an odd little crank, which will be described in the Timeline by Steve.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bob says that’s Ruby’s wiggling and the audience can tell what part  :-)!

Debbie Rugen (young like everyone, with brown hair like everyone, and wearing lots of flowers like everyone), COME ON DOWN!

Bob warns Debra to not get too close to Ruby or she’ll get knocked down.

Item #2: Aquarium (door #2/Cue 60/Dian?)

DEBRA: 250
Ruby: 175
Maria: 185
Cathy: 176

ARP: $429 for Debra

Debra will play Grocery Game for a Kimball Baby Grand Piano (door #3/Cue 74/Barbara?) worth $2380.

Products (Cue 86):

Buc Wheats cereal (good thing she knows all about it)
Creamettes macaroni
Wizzard air freshener
IMO dressing
Veg-all mixed vegetables

Debra tries to get Bob to help her do the math for her.

Debra wants to buy both the Buc Wheat and vegetables at once, but she starts with Buc Wheat (surprise).

She (eventually) buys 5 Buc Wheat, each is 64¢, 5 is $3.20.

She chooses vegetables and tries to figure out how many.  Bob says doing 5 x 6 is difficult.

She (eventually) buys 5 vegetables, each is 35¢, 5 is $1.75, total is $4.95.

Debra still has no clue.  She keeps going on about getting to $6.25 and something about $5.  Then she tries to multiply by writing in the air.  Bob says we’re lucky it’s an hour show.

She buys 3 IMO, each is 49¢, 3 is $1.47, total is $6.42.

She screams 1 Creamette, it’s 23¢, total is $6.65.  She’s finished.

She knows it’s over, but she then asks who makes the freshener.  Who cares?

1 is 69¢ and her total is $7.34 OVER

Debra asks what she wins.  Bob holds up his hand, makes a zero, and then says she didn’t do well.  It’s clear she isn’t quite with it.  But then Bob forgets what she won first.

At this point, Grocery Game’s front is corrugated steel.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bob tells us that his friend Juan reminded him of the aquarium.

Harriet Houston (woman with tan jacket and pants), COME ON DOWN!

Item #3: Shuffleboard (Cue 37/Janice & Dian?)

HARRIET: 275
Ruby: 300
Maria: 350
Cathy: 325

OVERBID

Harriet: 225
Ruby: 175
Maria: 235
Cathy: 200

ARP: $220 for Cathy

Cathy’s playing Most Expensive (Cue 15) for a Westinghouse washer/dryer (Barbara), an Admiral 25” TV (Dian), and a Bailey-Schmitz Sofa Sleeper (Janice)
Chooses #2

#1: $730
#3: $380
#2: $696 LOSS

Dian’s wig to make her look like Anitra’s not very convincing.  And Bob mentioned her name in the game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contestants not appearing on stage will receive Iron Weave pantyhose and a Litronix Calculator.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bob now introduces us to the first ever showcase showdown.  The Rainbow Wheel used this week was a sideways wheel with a scoreboard in the center and a big winner’s podium to the right.  The contestant spun from the left.  The contestants waited down in contestant’s row, covered up with big 1, 2, and 3 covers, with 1 going to the biggest winner.

Bob gives a long explanation of the rules, and says that $1.00 gives a $1000 bonus.  A tie will yield a spinoff.

Kathy’s 1st spin: 30
     2nd spin: 45 (almost $1000)
              total: 75

“Is the world ready for Debra?”
     1st spin: 50
     2nd spin: 15 (readout says 55)
total: 65 (Debra thinks she won)

Jeanette’s 1st spin: 25
      2nd spin: 95
       OVER

Kathy has won the first ever Showcase Showdown.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chase and Piggy Bank aren’t shown.

Bob doesn’t say there’s more Price is Right coming up, but there still is.  The bumper comes during the commercial.  The logo zooms in (can't tell if the lights are there), and the consolation music is used.

ARP: $2230, OUCH!

Range Game is blue and DOES have its name by this point (although Steve couldn't figure out how I could see it).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its screen shows a shot of door #3 from the brown set.

This is a very comprehensive recap, particularly with the music cue information. Great work!

You mentioned that they were in a hurry-up mode. Is that because of Debra's incessant screwing around during Grocery Game?

Yup, and you could tell it.  At the beginning of segment 2, Bob was talking and having fun.  After that, he clearly began moving faster.

I was curious how much time he made up, so I timed each segment of the show:

PG#1 - 7:40
PG#2 - 7:26
PG#3 - 4:30
SCSD#1 - 5:23
PG#4 - 4:01
PG#5 - 2:44
PG#6 - 3:49
SCSD#2 - 4:20
SC - 5:01

Wow. It just goes to show how one contestant can drastically affect Bob's mood and set the whole show behind schedule. I can't believe Debra took so much time to play Grocery Game! Another question about Debra: was she the type of clueless palyer that made you laugh or was she the kind that made you yell at the TV "Pick a freakin' product!"?

It didn't exactly affect his mood, but there was only 45 or so minutes to work with.  If they did this show today, they'd never get it on air without some serious edits.  I think they actually got away without doing any.

It is kinda ironic that this aired 3 years to the day after Boo Boo's incident...

I think she sorta got the idea but got kinda anxious, and she didn't seem to know diddly about math.  Half the time she was just trying to multiply.  If Bob HAD agreed to help her with the math, this game would've moved MUCH faster.

I was really laughing and yelling at her at the same  time.

one little bit of info- The episode that aired on September 08, 1975 was actually the third episode taped for that week according to the Price is right timeline page

Week 2 (158): September 11-12, 8-10

Originally scheduled for September 8-12.

so basically
1581D aired as the Thursday show.
1582D aired as the Friday show
1583D was the first one aired that week
1584D aired as the Tuesday show
1585D was aired as the Wednesday Show
